Five Steps to Better Handwriting

Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 1. Here are five steps that really work!

Get a great grasp

Try this—hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 2.Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index(食指) and middle fingers.

Let the lines be your guide

Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion(均衡).3. Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.

Slow down

If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.

Lower the pressure

4. That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.

5.

Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.

A. Play games.

B. Ask for more advice.

C. So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.

D. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.

E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.

F. The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.

G. The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.

For hundreds of millions of years, turtles (海龟) have struggled out of the sea to lay their eggs on sandy beaches, long before there were nature documentaries to celebrate them, or GPS satellites and marine biologists to track them, or volunteers to hand-carry the hatchlings (幼龟) down to the water’s edge lest (for fear that) they become disoriented by headlights and crawl towards a motel parking lot instead. A formidable wall of bureaucracy has been erected to protect their prime nesting on the Atlantic coastlines. With all that attention paid to them, you’d think these creatures would at least have the gratitude not to go extinct (die out).

But Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness, and a report by the Fish and Wildlife Service showed a worrisome drop in the populations of several species of North Atlantic turtles, notably loggerheads, which can grow to as much as 400 pounds. The South Florida nesting population, the largest, has declined by 50% in the last decade, according to Elizabeth Griffin, a marine biologist with the environmental group Oceana. The figures prompted Oceana to petition the government to upgrade the level of protection for the North Atlantic loggerheads from “threatened” to “endangered”— meaning they are in danger of disappearing without additional help.

Which raises the obvious question: what else do these turtles want from us, anyway? It turns out, according to Griffin, that while we have done a good job of protecting the turtles for the weeks they spend on land (as egg-laying females, as eggs and as hatchlings), we have neglected the years spend in the ocean. “The threat is from commercial fishing,” says Griffin. Trawlers (which drag large nets through the water and along the ocean floor) and longline fishers (which can deploy thousands of hooks on lines that can stretch for miles) take a heavy toll on turtles.

Of course, like every other environmental issue today, this is playing out against the background of global warming and human interference with natural ecosystems. The narrow strips of beach on which the turtles lay their eggs are being squeezed on one side by development and on the other by the threat of rising sea levels as the oceans warm. Ultimately we must get a handle on those issues as well, or a creature that outlived the dinosaurs (恐龙) will meet its end at the hands of humans, leaving our descendants to wonder how creature so ugly could have won so much affection.

1.We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.

A.human activities have changed the way turtles survive

B.efforts have been made to protect turtles from dying out

C.government bureaucracy has contributed to turtles’ extinction

D.marine biologists are looking for the secret of turtles’ reproduction

2.What does the author mean by “Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness” (Line 1, Para. 2)?

A.Nature is quite fair regarding the survival of turtles.

B.Turtles are by nature indifferent to human activities.

C.The course of nature will not be changed by human interference.

D.The turtle population has decreased in spite of human protection.

3.What constitutes a major threat to the survival of turtles according to Elizabeth Griffin?

A.Their inadequate food supply.

B.Unregulated commercial fishing.

C.Their lower reproductively ability.

D.Contamination(pollution) of sea water

4.How does global warming affect the survival of turtles?

A.It threatens the sandy beaches on which they lay eggs.

B.The changing climate makes it difficult for their eggs to hatch.

C.The rising sea levels make it harder for their hatchlings to grow.

D.It takes them longer to adapt to the high beach temperature.

Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they have only visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later.

I am one of those unfortunate people who have poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still get lost on my way there. When I was young I was so shy that I never dared ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hope that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for.

I am no longer too shy to ask people for direction, but I often receive replies that puzzle me. Often people do not like to admit that they didn’t know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way, even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you can not possibly hope to remember, and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going.

If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I always tell them I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving them wrong direction but even this can have embarrassing results.

Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him the way to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at this point, I decide it was too late to turn back and search for him out of the crowd behind me as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.

Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions of my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.

1.What is the writer going to do when someone asks him for direction?

A. He will direct the right way to the person willingly.

B. He will reply to it by the means of being a stranger to the town.

C. He will give the very person long list of direction.

D. He is going to show the man an opposite direction.

2.Why did the writer consider himself to be an unlucky dog?

A. Because of his poor sense of direction.

B. Because he always forget the way to home.

C. Because he did not have any friend.

D. Because he used to be shy and dared not ask others the way.

3.How did the visitor feel when he was showed into the very room?

A. He felt strange.B. He felt embarrassed.

C. He felt very sad.D. He felt astonished.

One of the most successful singers of the twentieth century, Ella Fitzgerald has made several different styles of her own. She was born in Virginia but was brought up in an orphanage in Yonkers, New York. Chick Webb spotted her in an amateur competition when she was sixteen. He engaged her to sing with his band and when he died in 1939, she took over.

Unlike Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald taught herself the sentimental music so popular in the 1930’s songs like “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” and her recordings became best-sellers. During the 1940’s she developed her own “scat singing” a breathless, nonsensesyllable stylefor songs like “Flying Home” and “Lady Be Good.”

Ella Fitzgerald was the perfect musical partner for her friend, the trumpeter Louis Armstrong, matching him in warmth and artistry. “I just like music, period,” she said. “To me, it’s a story. There’s only one thing better than singing…. It’s more singing.”

1.What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. A comparison of Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith.

B. The musical career of Ella Fitzgerald.

C. Ella Fitzgerald’s early childhood.

D. Ella Fitzgerald’s most recent recordings.

2.The underlined word “spotted” means ________.

A. noticedB. brought upC. employedD. recognized

3.What does the passage imply about Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong?

A. They were the founders of “scat singing”.

B. They played the same musical instruments.

C. They performed well together.

D. They were a married couple.

The winter holiday is coming. My classmates and I are talking about how to do during the holiday. We can chose between staying at home and take a trip. If we stay at home, it is comfortable but there is no need to spend money. But in that case, we will learn little about world. If we go on a trip abroad, we can broaden your view and gain knowledges we cannot get from books. Some classmates suggest we can go to places of interest nearby. I thought that it is a good idea. It does not cost many, yet we can still learn a lot.
