Once I found that the classmate sitting next me was crying.I asked her why she felt so sadly. She told me she was frustrating by her failure of passing the midterm maths exam. She said that she had stayed up all night prepared for the exam the night before.I told her that she mustn’t have studied all the time that night.Instead, if she had made the use of time properly, she would have passed the exam.I advised her to remember that she had experienced and let it be a lesson to him.My words really touched her and she finally smiled and dried her tear. Now she was one of the most efficient students in my class.

Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail?

At least one group of people is certain that it can.A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public.Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said.It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒).1. Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green – eyed monster” and the UK is its home.

Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money. 2.  Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others – but at the cost of losing their own.Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this.

3.  .But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world’s fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success.People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either.

“It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.“It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.”

4.   They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours.By their own efforts they become millionaires.5.  .It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them.

A.This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain.

B.The one who owns most money in the end is the winner.

C.As a result, the survey said, entrepreneurs were “unloved, unwanted and misunderstood.”

D.It is not true that British people are born jealous of others` success.

E.Some were given a little, others a great deal.

F.But instead of being happy they complain that nobody loves them.

G.Perhaps it is the entrepreneurs who are the problem.

An entire industry has been built upon the assumption that image is everything, but when it comes to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no substance(事实)behind the image, the product, service or person will fail eventually.

First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services.Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection.Public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal(丑闻)showed that behind that image, it cheated in business practices.Despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit.Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality, behind the image has led to the downfall of the word-famous accounting firm.

Similarly, personal advisers can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars.Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.

To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. But image is only half of the equation(等式).What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself—the person or product must deliver truth on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.

1.The down fall of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm is due to ________.

A.its previous images.         B.its dishonesty in business.

C.its bad management.         D.its poor service.

2.Why did some famous people fall from grace?

A.They failed to live up to their images.

B.Their images were not well built up.

C.They felt much pressure from the public.

D.They paid little attention to fame and fortune.

3.The structure of the passage is _________.

Scholarship Application Tips in 2014 for college students

Before you apply

1.Work hard to get good grades.Don’t sweat about one bad grade, but always strive(力求)to do your best.

2.Get involved, and stay involved, in extracurricular(课外的)activities.Sports, clubs, drama, bands and orchestras-these often count toward a student’s overall scholarship application evaluation. The same goes for paid (or unpaid) work experience.

3.Begin your scholarship research early-by your sophomore(大学二年级)or junior year of high school, if possible.Make special note of application deadlines, as they can vary from late summer to late spring.

4.Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible(符合条件的)for-several smaller scholarships can add up to a lot of money.

During the application process

1.Read the supplementary materials that come with scholarship application forms to better understand the program’s focus (community service, subject interest).Try to answer the questions with the focus area in mind.

2.Answer questions as they are asked.Don’t go off the topic.

3.If there is a financial component to the application, make sure you get accurate and complete information from all appropriate sources to ensure your eligibility.

4.Take your time.Write down everything you can think of for each question, then set the application aside for a day so you can look everything over again before you send it off.

5.Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your application, especially if you are applying online.Computer systems can get clogged(阻塞的)with the large volume of applicants hoping to submit their qualifications during the last few days and hours before a deadline.

6.If a third party has to complete part of your application, such as providing a letter of recommendation, make sure you ask them early on and remind them as often as necessary to ensure they provide you with the necessary materials.
