To me, the idea of home changes along with my age all the time.

In my childhood, home was a number of calls. It seems that I had more free time than today’s children. I didn’t have to appear in front of my parents right after school. Instead, I often went to play with my classmates who lived in my neighborhood. We played until dinner was ready and our parents called “Come back! Come home for supper.”

Very soon, my childhood was gone. When I grew into a young man from a boy. Home became a place I tried to run away from.

As I read more and more, my world opened up, larger than before. The bed I used to sleep in became too small. And words of care from my parents became meaningless. How I wished I could have a space of my own someday! Later I joined the army and put on my own green uniform. Home was the series of letters I received one after another.

When I got a job, I began to get ‘hurt’, to rise and fall in the sea of people, and to understand that you can’t share all your pains with other people, even with your best friends. So again, another wave of homesickness came over me. When I was badly hurt, I imagined myself flying home on wings. Pushing open the door, I let tears flow down my face. At that moment I felt that as large as the world was, what I needed was only the familiar smell of home and the unchanged view outside the window of my old house

A priest(牧师) had a cat that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The priest persuaded(劝说), offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not strong enough to climb, so the priest decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent(弯曲)down, he could then reach up and get the kitty. She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, you can keep it. ” She told the priest, “I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world? The sun was probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos(爱斯基摩人) live. There, it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun for a clock. Even today, if you don’t have a clock, you still know that when the sun shines, it’s day, and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can also tell you if it’s morning, noon, or afternoon.

People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.

Seamen on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.

In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.

A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again.
