As kids we learn how to write maybe play a musical instrument and draw. So why don’t we learn to code(编码) computer programs too? What coding has in common with writing playing music and creating art is that it lets you bring your ideas to life. Coding is all about creativity and that’s why I love it.

Creating with code

CoderDojo helps young people around the world to learn computer programming for free. When I went to my first CoderDojo class in Dublin City University in Ireland at age nine I didn’t know anything about coding or even  such a thing. It was a great feeling that I think every young person should experience!

By going to CoderDojo every week I learned how to make websites apps and games. One of my apps is called Auto-Journalist. It can help journalists(记者) and interviewees do interviews even if they are both really busy or live in different time zones. It is still in development and it first appeared at an event called Coolest Projects Awards where young people get to show the public what they have created with code. It’s so much fun to share one’s creations and to see what everyone else has made too.

Learning environment

For the past three years I have also been helping to teach other young people at CoderDojo DCU. In recent years I have also noticed many more girls attending CoderDojo DCU to try out coding. This has a lot to do with the CoderDojo girls’ classes—girls and young women take part in it with their friends and it doesn’t feel like coding is a “boy thing”. It is really wonderful to see this because we need more girls and women in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math). It’s a good way to learn more about technology.

Start early

One of the main things I have learned in the last few years is that coding is not only for adults coding is for young people too. And when you are a child it is a great time to start coding because your imagination is the limit(限制) for what you can create!

Want to learn more? Find out if there is a CoderDojo near you at www.coderdojo.com or set one up yourself! Also check out Code.org which has lots of fun drag-and-drop coding games.

My dad was a plumber(水管工) for the public works department in our town so from time to time he came into my school. Can you imagine sitting in class and seeing your dad walk past the door of your classroom and wave his hand at you? In junior high?

One girl in our class always made fun of me because my dad was a plumber and hers was a lawyer(律师) and she would say things like “Ew that’s gross(粗俗的)!” I must admit I was sometimes embarrassed by what my dad did especially in my early teens when the only thing I really cared about was what the other girls thought.

Her father the lawyer called every plumber in the Yellow Page but nobody would come and because we were having a major snowstorm. Her daughter told him that my father was a plumber and he called and my dad went right over---and took me with him.(Maybe he was hoping that the lawyer’s daughter would be nicer to me.) My father fixed the toilet help them clean up everything and didn’t take much time for his trouble. But as we were leaving he told the girl “If I ever need a lawyer I’ll be happy to call your dad.”

As we walked to our car he said to me “Do you believe he didn’t know where the main shut-off valve(阀) was? What a dumb ass!”

From that point on her dad was known in school as Lawyer Dumb Ass.

When my husband and I bought our house the first thing my dad showed him was the main shut-off valve.

I have always been proud to say that I’m a plumber’s daughter.

“Face it Andy. You sold your soul the day you put on that first pair of Jimmy Choo’s.” That line from the movie The Devil Wears Prada is an example showing how a shoemaker has become famous in the fashion world.

Jimmy Choo (Zhou Yangjie) is a native Malaysian of Chinese origin (出身) born in 1961 into a family of shoemakers. He created his first pair of shoes at age 11. His family couldn’t pay for his schooling so he dropped out at a young age. He had to work with his father to support the family. But his dream to be a fashion designer never disappeared so he did all he could to enter an art college and finally took up a position in the fashion world through his talent and willpower.

Choo graduated from a college in London and had a small workshop there. He hit the international fashion scene when Vogue magazine described his designs in eight pages in 1988. His work was immediately popular and got love and support from Diana Princess of Wales.

Jimmy Choo shoes are known for their very high heels (鞋跟) and pointed toes. However he does some flats and lower-heeled shoes for other women. Choo co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd. with Tamara Mellon UK Vogue editor but left the company in 2001.

Jimmy Choo shops have opened around the world so his designs are more accessible to those who want a designer shoe and can afford his prices. Choo also has a website where shoppers can view his ready-to-wear designs. The brand (牌子) of Jimmy Choo has been comparable to top brands like Channel LV etc. But it’s still young and has a bright future.

We can’t imagine how hard it is for Choo to stand out in the worldwide fashion! He must have made greater efforts and had more difficulties than others. And so he did. So stop complaining about why good luck isn’t always falling on you and devote yourselves to your work now.

A good night's sleep

Do you get the sleep you need?

Having enough sleep can make the difference between a great day and a terrible one!

Here are the tips for a good night's sleep:

First go to bed and get up at the same time even if you haven't gotten a good night's sleep.

Sleeping late for just a few days can change your body clock to a different cycle.

Also avoid big meals at night. Eating heavy rich food within two hours of bedtime can keep you awake Your stomach works hard because of those fatty foods and that may keep you up. Your body

produces a chemical called melatonin that helps you sleep. Light changes the amount of melatonin. It produces more in the evening and less in the daytime. So at night turn off your TV and PC. Also don't read from abacklit device(有背光的设备) like an iPad. Some scientists think that the light from those devices stops your body from making melatonin. So turn those screens off at least an hour before bedtime.

After a good night's sleep you'll be able to face a new day.
