As my dad unwrapped(打开)the new bicycle helmet(头盔)that I got him for his birthday, I realized that a number of people ride their bicycles every day without the protection of a helmet. Due to cold winters across the country, riding has become increasingly dangerous as many roads have holes and are torn-up(磨损的). Not everyone realizes that there are laws requiring the wearing of helmets in many places. Where I live, there has been a law in place since October 1, 1992 stating that cyclists of all ages are required to wear helmets. Unfortunately, accidents can happen to the best of riders. My dad has been a cyclist for many years, and he often rides around my county and to Rockland Lake State Park. One afternoon, as he was just entering the park, he lost control of his bicycle and flew off and landed on a nearby patch of grass, breaking his helmet into pieces and losing consciousness(知觉). When he was just awakening, a lovely couple found him and brought him back to our house, where he attempted to recall the events leading up to his fall. Later that day, a CAT scan showed that he had a concussion (脑震荡). That evening, while my dad was showing me the pieces of his broken helmet, we both came to a shocking realization. If he had not worn his helmet, he probably would have cracked his skull and perhaps died. Today, when my dad and I go out cycling, the wearing of our helmets is not even a question. Regardless of age, everyone should wear a helmet whenever they get on a bicycle. 1.In the writer’s opinion, why should people wear bicycle helmets? A. Because a law requires them to do so. B. Because many people like wearing bicycle helmets. C. Because people have realized the importance of wearing helmets. D. Because the conditions of roads are very poor and it is dangerous to ride on them. 2.The underlined part “we both came to a shocking realization” in Paragraph 4 means “_______”. A. we understood how lucky the dad was to have worn a helmet B. we were shocked to see the broken helmet C. we realized that young people needn’t wear helmets D. only old people should wear helmets 3.From the accident that happened to the writer’s dad, we can infer that ___________. A. the cyclists should follow the law B. his dad was not worried about this accident C. it is necessary for cyclists to wear helmets D. everyone should care about life

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。(注意:每个空格只填一个单词。) Starting high school is an important event in a young person’s life. To make friends on your first day of high school, firstly, you should try to make a good first impression. So take care what you say and how you say it. Don’t be loud and remember people’s names when they introduce themselves. Be friendly and keep smiling because people are much more likely to talk to someone who is smiling and appears confident. Secondly, don’t do anything you aren’t comfortable with doing just in order to fit in with a person or crowd. You want people to like you for being yourself, and giving a false impression can lead to embarrassment (尴尬) later. Take the time to introduce yourself to people that you think may have similar interests to yours. Thirdly, you can start a conversation with people about the school layout (布局). Ask how you can get to your classroom or dormitory, and most people will want to be helpful and may walk you to it, giving you chance to get to know them better. Fourthly, consider taking part in after-class activities that you are interested in, such as sports, band and drama club. High school will have a much wider choice of after-class activities than you were used to in middle school. Last but not least, give it time. Making good friends will take time especially as you have a new school routine to get used to as well. Do not rush into getting to know people. After all, there is a good chance that the friends you make in the first weeks of high school will be with you through the rest of your school life.

Stress may be defined as the response of the body to any demand. Whenever people experience something pleasant or unpleasant, we say they are under stress. We call the pleasant kind “eustress”, the unpleasant kind “distress”. People sometimes compare our lives with that of the caveman, who didn’t have to worry about the stock market or the atomic bomb (原子弹). They forget that the caveman worried about being eaten by a bear or about dying of hunger—things that few people worry about today. It is not that people suffer more stress today; it is just that they think they do. It is inconceivable (不可思议) that anyone should have no stress at all. Most people who are ambitious and want to accomplish something live on stress. They need it. But excessive stress is by all means harmful. Worse, chronic (长期的) exposure to stress over a long time may cause more serious diseases and may actually shorten your life. //The most frequent causes of distress in man are psychological—lack of adaptability (适应能力), not having a code (规范,准则) of behaviour. So the secret of dealing with stress is not to avoid it but to do what you like to do and what you are made to do, at your own rate. For most people, it is really a matter of learning how to behave in various situations. The most important thing is to have a code of life, to know how to live. 1.The modern man is suffering . A. more stress than the caveman B. less stress than the caveman C. different stress from the caveman D. the same stress as the caveman 2.Which of the following is an example of eustress? A. Being lack of adaptability and code of life. B. Triumph (成功,胜利) in a contest. C. Having just lost a job. D. Learning how to do something. 3.The best way to deal with stress is to . A. do the things of our own accord B. try to lengthen our life C. become ambitious in business D. get more eutress and meet less distress 4.The main idea of the passage is . A. how to form a code of life B. that life means stress C. how we are supposed to treat stress D. how to prevent stress in advance 5.What does the underlined words in Paragraph 1 mean? A. give a definition for the meaning of a word B. give direction to C. grow worse D. refused
