Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I’m Roy Darby, and this is my show. This is a television show for all the families and I know you’re going to enjoy it.

Let’s start with a story I heard the other day about a very proud pig. This pig lived on a farm with a lot of other animals. And of all the animals on the farm, he thought he was the most important. But it was not enough that he himself thought this way. He had to be sure that the other animals thought so, too. So he went up to one of the chickens and asked, “Who is the most important animal on the farm?” Straight away, the chicken answered, “You’re, Master.” Then he asked one of the farm dogs and he got the same reply.

Next, he asked a cow. When the cow seemed uncertain of the right answer, the pig looked angry and showed his teeth. “Oh, you are, of course, Master Pig,” said the cow. “Of course,” the pig said. “There is no doubt about it.”

At last, the pig asked a big horse, “Who is the most important animal on the farm?” The horse lifted one foot, rolled the pig over, and placed his foot on the pig’s head. “All right,” said the pig, “you don’t have to do that just because you don’t know the answer.”

Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘录) from his speech.

I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饶舌音乐) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.

But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.

That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.

No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit(承认) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.

And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged (泄气), and you feel like other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

1.Why does Barack Obama mention JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the fourth paragraph?

A. To compare (比较) these two famous persons.

B. To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills.

C. To show that the two persons were treated unfairly.

D. To prove that failure is the mother of success.

2.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. No one can be successful without working hard.

B. Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.

C. Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.

D. One should try his best to make his dream come true.

3.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?

A. One should change his mind when others give honest advice to him.

B. One should believe in himself no matter what difficulty he is faced with.

C. One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.

D. One doesn’t have to take others’ advice when they get away from him.

4.Who is JK Rowling?

A. The present’s wife

B. It may be a writer’s name.

C. A basketball player

D. Harry Potter’s mother

5. The underlined words in the paragraph4 means“     ”in Chinese.

A.拒绝            B.放下            C. 接受       D.放弃

There was once a man called Mr. Flowers, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his free time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every color, with long and difficult names, for competitions (比赛). He tried to grow a rose of a new color to win the silver cup (银杯) for the Rose of the Year.

Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses were very near to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen of age were often tempted (引诱) to throw a stone or two at one of Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or near his glass-houses at the beginning and end of the school day.

But it was not always possible to be on watch at those times. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to protect his glass, but nothing that he had done had been useful. He had been to school to report to the headmaster; but this had not done any good. He ha-d tried to drive away the boy that threw stones into his garden; but the boys could run faster than he could, and they laughed at him from far away. He had even picked up all the stones that he could find around his garden so that the boys would have nothing to throw; but they soon found others.

At last Mr. Flowers had a good idea. He put up a large notice (布告) made of good, strong wood some meters away from the glass-houses. On it he had written the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE.
