A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves --- the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too ashamed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.

Words have power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.

Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.

A. not sticks and stones but words will hurt us

B. encouraging words give us confidence

C. negative words may let us down

D. words have a great effect on us

2.There is no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves because ______

A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves

B. talking to ourselves can has positive effect on us

C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage

D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone

3.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______

A. praise ourselves    B. remind ourselves

C. make ourselves relaxed    D. give ourselves happiness

4.The author would probably hold the view that ___________

A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers

B. negative words may stimulate us to make more progress

C. people tend to remember friendly words

D. it is better to think twice before talking to others

It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ihan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness of the strange over spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.

At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town!

We ended up writing our IOU's with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of work in a variety of ways if he needs it.

I think the idea isn't that the trade is "equal" so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.

We don't buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don't give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other's company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible.

Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.

1.Ilan did not take any money that day in order to_________.

A. have a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip

B. buy nothing that day to save some money

C. make people aware of their over spending

D. trade for something of equal value in return

2.For the meal, the author finally offered Ilan ________.

A. some promises    B. a book

C. some paintings    D. work in different ways

3.What is the author’s attitude to Buy Nothing Day?

A. Disagreeable    B. Meaningless.

C. Supportive.    D. Doubtful.

A 13-year-old boy who had been reported missing four years ago was discovered alive, hidden behind a fake wall of a home near Atlanta, Georgia, and was sent to live with his mother early on Saturday, police said.

Five people living in the home in Jonesboro, 17 miles (28km) south of Atlanta, were caught by the police, among them the boy’s father, Gregory, 37, and a woman, said Sergeant Kevin Hughes of the Clayton County police.

Gregory and Samantha Joy Davis were facing charges of false imprisonment, abuse on children and attacking an officer, he said, adding that three teenagers also in the home were facing charges.

The boy’s mother clearly had reported him missing to the child welfare but not the police, and no missing person’s report was found in Clayton County, Hughes said. And the teen was able to get a phone recently and told his mother his whereabouts, authorities said.

Clayton County police went to the home on Friday to look for the 13-year-old but Gregory and Davis said they had no information about the boy, Hughes said.

Several hours later, police came back and again searched the house. While the police were in the home, the boy called his mother, who told officers where her son was hidden in the house, Hughes said. “They discovered him hidden behind a false wall in the inside part of the home,” he said. The boy appeared to be in good physical health and was reunited with his mother, who had come to Georgia from out of the state, Hughes said.

Neighbors in their quiet, well-kept Jonesboro neighborhood said the family moved in about six months ago and kept to themselves. The 13-year-old boy always seemed to be home and did not appear to go to school, they said.

1.Where was the boy finally found?

A. Behind a fake wall of his mother’s home.

B. In a hidden place in his father’s house.

C. In their quiet neighborhood.

D. In 17 miles south of Atlanta, Georgia.

2.The underlined word "whereabouts" in the text perhaps means _________.

A. Place    B. Direction

C. Home    D. Phone

3.Which is the best title for the passage?

A. A 13-year-old teen was found in his home.

B. A teen missing four years ago was found alive.

C. Charges from Clayton County police.

D. Mother’s concern about her son’s safety.
