Dear Jim, How is everything going? I’m glad to receive your e-mail, in which you asked me about my career plan for the future. Now I’m writing to share it with you in details. I made up my mind to be a journalist when I visited the Xinhua News Agency last year. I chose it as my career for two reasons. First, the job can let me know new things every day, thus keeping us energetic and passionate all the time since I hate to follow the same routine every day. Second, working as a journalist can help me realize my childhood dream of being a hero of spreading love to others. Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a conscious(自觉的) effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.

Memory “tricks” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber(理发师) shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never get tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “tricks” of our memory can cause us great trouble.

1.If we want to have a good memory, _______.

A. we should force ourselves to remember things

B. we should make a conscious effort of practice and exercise

C. we should never stop learning

D. we should try hard to remember things

A. we enjoy hearing new stories about absent-mindedness of professors

B. we don’t want to know anything more about absent-mindedness of professors

C. we will never get tired of listening to new stories about absent-mindedness

D. absent-mindedness happens not only to professors but to many other people

4.In the passage, the writer seems to tell us _______.

A. forgetting things is serious and dangerous

B. always forgetting things is understandable

C. forgetting things at times is natural

D. the way to protect yourself from memory “tricks”

5.The best title for this passage is _______.

A. How to Get a Good Memory

The quick action of Nick helped five people escape a fire on Hope Road. Nick said he usually left his house about 5:30 a.m. to do morning exercises, but that day he decided to stay at home to get his daughter ready for school. As he looked at his neighbor’s house, he realized that it was on fire. “I saw smoke and flames and ran over and started beating on the side of the house shouting, ‘Your house is on fire! Your house is on fire!’” Nick remembered it was at about 9 a.m. that the firefighters put out the fire.

Beverly Penny and her husband, Clark, along with their younger daughters, were sleeping in the living room, next to the kitchen, when they heard Nick beating on the walls. She opened the bedroom door and black smoke came in. She managed to get her kids out. Her dog tried to hide under the bed, but Penny caught it by the leg and threw it out of the door. However, chickens in one of the rooms weren’t so lucky.

Firefighters got the call at about 7:05 a.m. “When we arrived with our fire trucks, there were heavy flames outside on the house,” Jerry said. He called Nick a hero, saying that without his quick responses(回应) the result could have been much worse. “The firefighters were fast,” Nick said. “They arrived here within about three minutes.”

“They did a great job, and I can’t thank them enough,” Penny said, then looked at what remained in the house and shook her head as tears rolled down in her eyes. “Everything I have is gone. Luckily nobody was hurt in the fire.” She said the fire could have been caused by an electrical problem. “We’ve been having problems with mice, so that we could have had something to do with it,” she added.
