In many countries, it is important to have many children. In the US, a few religious groups emphasize(强调) the importance of large families, but most people think one or two children are enough, and many couples have no children.1. Having many children would restrict the freedom and individualism(个人主义) of the parents as well as the other children in the family.

Parents teach individualism by the way they raise their children.2. Parents begin teaching this self-reliance (自力更生)early , asking the child to do things on her own and praising her when she does.

3. They bring their children with them to church , to sporting events, to stores, and to social events. However , many places, such as expensive restaurants and live theatre productions , do not welcome children. Most formal social gatherings , those with written invitations do not welcome children either.

Children, especially boys are expected to be energetic and assertive(果敢的). 4.  Parents are expected to keep their children under control at all times, particularly in public places and in the homes of others. When a child misbehaves , only the child's parents may discipline him.5. Most parents discipline(训导) their children by rewarding good behaviors, not by punishing bad behaviors. While a spanking() , a slap to the child's buttocks(屁股), is acceptable to some people, any punishment that wounds the child or leaves a mark is considered child abuse and is against the law.

A.The relationship between American parents and their children is harmony.

B.That doesn't mean, though, that they are allowed to "run wild" in public.

C.Because taking care of a child is very costly, financially, emotionally, and socially,  many couples view large families as a disadvantage.

D.Other adults should not interfere (干涉)unless the child is doing something which may be harmful to himself.

E.American children are expected to accept invitations to a formal party.

F.Many parents want to expose(使暴露) their children to a variety of situations.

G.They want to create a self-reliant, independent child, who can make it on her own by age eighteen.

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don’t panic(恐慌)!You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!

With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed(知晓) about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced decisions that will help shape your future. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not ever see all of your classmates again.

You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely!

It is said that shyness is a disease or mental condition that can be cured. I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It's something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some ways of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion, it's a waste of time. I don't mean that we should do nothing about it. Quite the contrary, I think we need to separate the basic fact of shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment.

Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Tony White. This man is painfully shy, yet for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往) with different people every night, in front of a national audience.  White has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a   way to deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend(传奇) among talk show hosts.  Look also at Amy Lee, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films, TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.

I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感) and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults, we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul.

1.In the author's view, shyness can be explained as ______.

A. an emotional disability

B. a not very normal mental condition

C. a disease that can be easily cured

D. something we pick up after birth

2.The underline expression “doing away with” most probably means “_____”.

A. keeping away from

B. getting rid of

C. catching up with

D. doing well in

3.Which of the following is TRUE of Tony White?

A. He was described as a hero in some legend books.

B. He didn’t dare to speak in front of a national audience.

C. He has dealt with shyness very successfully.

D. He failed to become a good talk show host.

4.The passage tells us that Amy Lee was ______

A. proud all the time

B. impolite when young

C. close to Jane Fonda

D. shy in her early years

In your daily life, are you often a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness.Or,in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day.The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.

In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon.Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate.A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps.Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap.Remember that the best time to take a nap isabout eight hours after you get up.A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward.
