As Frank went downstairs, his eyes fell on a large brown envelope by the door. He was very excited when he opened it and read the letter inside. "Bigwoods Football Pools would like to congratulate you. You, have won half a million pounds. "

Frank suddenly came to life. The cigarette fell from his lips as he let out a shout that could be heard halfway down the street. At 11:30 Frank arrived at work. "Please explain why you are so late," his boss said. "Go and jump in the lake," replied Frank. "I've just come into a little money so this is goodbye. Find someone else to shout at. "

Each Indian tribe had a different language. Many Indians never learned any language except their own. Do you know how Indians from different tribes talked to each other? They had two ways to talk without sound. One way was by sign language. Another way is by signals.

Sign language is a way of talking by using signs. Indians used sign language when they met strangers. In this way, they could find out whether the stranger was a friend or an enemy. In Indian sign language, signs were made with the hands. One sign meant "man". Another meant "horse".

To tell the time of day when something happened, an Indian pointed to the sky. He showed where the sun had been at the time.

Indians usually used signals when they wanted to send messages to someone far away. To make signals, an Indian might use a pony. He might use a blanket. Or he might use smoke, a mirror or fire arrows.

To signal that he had seen many animals, an Indian rode his pony in a large circle. Sometimes the Indian gave a signal like this and then went away to hide. This means that there was danger.

The blanket signal was visible from far away. An Indian held the corners of a blanket in his hands. Then he began to swing the blanket from side to side in front of him. An Indian could send many different signals with his blanket.

He could also send many signals with a mirror. He usually used the mirror to warn someone of danger. Or he attempted to get the attention of a person far away. But he also used it to send messages in code. Of course, mirrors could be used only when the sun was shining. At night, Indians used fire arrows for signaling.

Now you can see that Indians didn't need to learn each other's language. They could talk to one another by using signals or sign language.

1.For signaling, an Indian held         .

A. a blanket in front of him by the corners

B. the corners of a blanket and swang it in front of him

C. one side of the blanket and let someone else hold the other side

D. the blanket corners and ran from one side to the other

2.An Indian used a mirror to           .

A. warn someone of danger    B. get the attention of someone far away

C. send messages in code    D. all of the above

3.The underlined word "pony" in the fourth paragraph probably means "      ".

A. camel    B. goat

C. horse    D. donkey

I heard the story about a king in Africa who had a close friend with whom he had grown up. The friend had a habit of looking at every situation that occurred in his life (positive or negative) and remarking ,"This is good!"

One day the king and his friend were out on a hunting trip. The friend would load(装弹药) and prepare the guns for the king. The friend had obviously done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off.

Examining the situation the friend remarked as usual, "This is good!" to which the king replied, "No, this is NOT good!" and sent his friend to prison.

About a year later, the king was hunting in an area where he should have known not to hunt. Cannibals(食人肉之野蛮人)caught him and took him and his men to their village. They tied his hands, piled some wood, set up a wooden pole and tied him to the pole. As they came close to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb. Being superstitious(迷信的), they never ate anyone who was less than whole. So untying the king, they sent him on his way.

As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt sorry for his treatment of his friend. He went immediately to the prison to speak with his friend. "You were right", he said, "it was good that my thumb was blown off. " And he told the friend all that had just happened. "And so I am very sorry for sending you to prison for so long. It was bad of me to do this. ""No," his friend replied, "this is good!" "What do you mean, 'this is good!' How could it be good that I sent my friend to prison for a year?" "If I had NOT been in prison, I would have been with you, and I would have been eaten!"
