Dear Peter, Knowing that you express a keen interest in Chinese culture, I’m more than glad to tell you something concerning the Double Ninth Festival. The Double Ninth Festival, a traditional Chinese festival, falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. In fact, it is a festival for the elderly. On this day, some pay a visit to their parents or grandparents, sending them their best wishes and spending some fun time with them. Others may do some voluntary work in a nursing house. They sing, dance, play games with these senior citizens and keep them company. In my opinion, this festival is of great significance because it reminds the young to have a sincere respect for the aged. I hope you have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture after knowing more about the Double Ninth Festival. I had a dream last night. I dreamed that I take part in a race in the sports meeting. At first, I could not run fast and fell behind. So I didn’t lose heart and kept running. My classmates on the playground were exciting and they all cheered me on, “Come on!” Thanks to their encouragement, it was not long after I caught up with all the other runner. In the end, I was the first to reach to the finishing line. I felt very proudly of myself. Many of my classmates threw me down into the air. Just at that moment we woke up and found myself still lying in bed. What interesting dream!

How to Welcome Change in Your Life

Do you enjoy the road you are now on or resist and avoid change at all costs when a recent event has shaken you greatly? Here are things you can do while feeling uncertain to choose differently to change the way of your life.

Don’t react.

What do we do when we don’t know what to do? First, stop, take a deep breath and don’t do anything. 1. It is having faith and trusting what you do know in the unknown.

Reflect on the past.

Another activity is to recall times in your life when you were faced with an unknown. Then, think about how you dealt with the situation.2. Use your past experiences to bring you strength, and to remind you what you are able to do.

Make conscious (有意识的) decisions.

3. However, more possibilities open up when we are at peace. Go over your list of what ifs and make a more balanced list of the best and worst situations possible. Then talk to loved ones about what you would do in each situation and the choices you do have.

4.

We often see fears as our greatest enemy, yet they provide us with a great opportunity for self-growth. What if we were to see them as friends who want to help us become a better person? Let your fears help you instead of hurting you. Then, write down what comes to you.5.

A. Don’t panic.

B. Befriend your fears.

C. You may be surprised by the answers.

D. Our choices seem limited when we are fearful.

E. Then try to stay calm with the state of “not knowing”.

F. Learning from past failures helps you make better decisions.

G. Remembering the past will remind you that you’ve gone through difficult situations.

It may be common knowledge that what British people call “football” is known as “soccer” in the US, and “colour” in British English (BrE) goes without the “u” in American English (AmE). But according to a chart made recently by website Grammar Check, these are far from being the only differences between the two countries, use of English. The chart outlined 63 of the main contrasts (对照) between BrE and AmE, from the more well-known “lift/elevator” and “autumn/fall” to the lesser-known “garden/yard” and “petrol/gasoline”.

Some of the vocabulary mismatches are so different that two people in a conversation may fail to understand each other. For example, the two countries have different names for certain food. “Biscuits” and “sweets” in Britain are known as “cookies” and “candies”, respectively, in the US. But while getting food names mixed up only causes puzzle, some misunderstandings may lead to embarrassment (尴尬) if you’re not careful. If a British man in the US is asked to show up a party in “pants”, there’s a chance that he might get a lot of stares from other guests. “Pants” in the UK means underwear. “Trousers” are what you need to ask a British friend to wear if you don’t want them to cause a scene among your friends.

However, even if 63 is already a lot, there are still many differences that the chart failed to cover. If a US girl walks into a UK barber and says “I want to have my bangs fixed’’, for example, it could take a while before the hairdresser realizes what she means is actually her “fringe”.

1.By listing many examples in the first paragraph, the author mainly tells us       .

A. BrE and AmE are different in spelling

B. BrE and AmE have a lot of similar words

C. there are many differences between BrE and AmE

D. people are much more familiar with “lift/elevator”

2.The underlined word “respectively” in paragraph 2 means       .

A. separately    B. both

C. respectfully    D. similarly

3.If a British man is asked to attend a party in “pants”, he might       .

A. feel uncomfortable or ashamed

B. be attractive among his friends

C. be puzzled at others’ dresses

D. ask for a pair of trousers instead

4.We can conclude from the last paragraph that       .

A. the British are slow in understanding

B. the chart includes all the differences

C. the hairdresser doesn’t know “bang”

D. AmE differs quite a lot from BrE
