Next morning, there was no wind and we were half a mile from the eastern coast of the island. Although the sun shone bright and hot, I hated the thought of Treasure Island, afraid of what would happen there.

Guns were given to all the honest men. Hunter, Joyce, and Redruth were told what was happening, and were less surprised than we expected them to be. Then the captain went on deck to talk to the crew.

They all became happier at once. I think they thought they would find the treasure lying around on the beach! After some talk, six men stayed on board, and the others, with Silver, got into the small boats.

I then had the first of the mad ideas that help ed to save our lives. If six men were left, we could not take control of the ship; and because only six were left, the captain’s men did not need my help. So I quickly went over the ship’s side and into the nearest boat.

No one took much notice of me, only one man saying, “Is that you, Jim?” But Silver called from the other boat, wanting to know if it was me. Then I began to worry if I had done the right thing.

The crews rowed to the beach and our boat arrived first. I ran towards the trees. Silver and the rest were a hundred metres behind, and I heard him shouting, “Jim, Jim!” But I took no notice, pushing through trees and bushes, and ran until I could run no longer.

I was pleased to lose Long John and began to enjoy looking around this strange island. I crossed wet ground and came to a long, open piece of sand, then went on to a place where the trees had branches that were thick and close to the sand.

Just then I heard distant voices, Silver’s among them, and hid behind a tree. Through the leaves, I saw Long John Silver and another of the crew talking together.

“I’m warning you because I’ m your friend, Tom,” Silver was saying.

“Silver,” said Tom: “You’re old and you’re honest, or so men say; and you’ve money, too, which lots of poor seamen haven’t. And you’re brave. Why let yourself be led away with that kind of scoundrel? I’d rather die than—”

Suddenly, there was a noise of distant shouting, then a long horrible scream. I had found one honest man here, and that terrible, distant scream told me of another.

“John!” said Tom: “What was that?”

“That?” replied Silver. His eyes shone like pieces of broken glass in the sun: “That’ll be Alan.”

“Alan!” cried poor Tom: “An honest and true seaman! John Silver, you’ve been a friend of mine, but for no longer. You’ve killed Alan, have you? Then kill me, too, if you can!”

The brave man turned his back on Silver and began to walk back to the beach. With a shout, Silver threw his crutch through the air. It hit poor Tom between the   shoulders, and he fell to the ground with a cry.

Scientists say they have discovered a possible cure for all five known Ebola viruses. Antibodies (抗体) that are used in the cure were discovered in the blood of a survivor.

Kartik Chandran of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine helped discover the antibodies. They are described online in the journal Cell. Chandran says studies of the antibody in non-human primates (非灵长类动物) have shown positive results. He says he is optimistic that the antibodies can be used to protect and treat people, too.

he virus was given the name Ebola because the first recorded outbreak of the disease took place along the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) — then known as Zaire

— in 1976.

Since then, there have been about 24 Ebola outbreaks in Africa, including one happening now in the DRC. Nine people have been infected and three people have died. The most recent Ebola epidemic took place from 2013 to 2016. It killed more than 11,000 people and infected

29,000 in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

During that epidemic, researchers were studying an anti-Ebola drug called Zmapp. Doctors began using it even before the study was complete. Zmapp   uses antibodies discovered in mice. They use the body’s natural immune system to fight infection. If the drug is given within five days after Ebola infection symptoms appear, it can cure the disease.

Promising results

But researcher Kartik Chandran says Zmapp is effective only against Ebola Zaire. It does not fight the other four known Ebola viruses.

Chandran says the recently discovered human antibodies attack and destroy all five of the viruses. Researchers say the antibodies work by interfering with a process that the disease uses to infect and multiply inside cells. Chandran says scientists discovered the antibodies in just six months.

The drug company Mapp Pharmaceutical Incorporated is now testing the antibodies in monkeys that have been exposed to Ebola. Spokespeople for the company say the antibodies have

so far been safe and effective.

Chandran says he hopes the antibodies can also be tested in people soon. And, he says, he hopes they can finally be used both as a treatment and as a vaccine (疫苗) to prevent people from getting Ebola in the first place.

Do you think telling lies, whether a little or a lot, isn’t that big of a deal? Well, that depends on the situation. If someone asks, “Does this dress make me look fat?” we might all lie somewhat. We might say, “Of course not. You look great.” Lying to spare someone’s feelings is one thing. Lying to destroy someone’s character or fame is another.

“What’s really terrible is that you can’t undo a big lie,” says a minister we’ll call Morgan. “I promise if you go house to house to say, ‘I feel terrible I wrongly accused my neighbor of stealing,’ the lie will spread like a fire fueled by gasoline. You can’t call back a lie very easily.”

Morgan goes on to say that lies have hurt people more than guns.

“We have a grandfather in our church whose former son-in-law told people the man treated his own children cruelly,” Morgan says. “To this day, we don’t know whether it is true or not. I would tend to doubt it, but I can’t take a chance, especially if he is working with young people in our church.”

Disarming someone who lies is tough. It’s like disarming someone who’s prepared to fire.

That’s why our society is full of people who are forced to cover up the lies of other people.

“I worked with a man who was stealing money from our employer,” says a man we’ll call Fred. “He was so good at lying and doctoring the books (做假账) that it would have taken an FBI agent to stop him. I worried, ‘If I turned him in, and he got out of the trouble, my career at our company would come to an end.’”

Fred says he came up with a plan to drop hints ( ) to the company owner. “I found printed materials on monitoring possibly dishonest employees. I started mailing them to the company owner without leaving my name. Then one day, over lunch, I told my boss he should have the books checked carefully. He got the hint.”

Fred told us that when the books were checked, the dishonest co-worker tried to blame him for the errors. However, Fred told the company owner he had been dropping hints for some time. The boss got the picture. Fred kept his job. The dishonest guy was fired.

Figuring out how to make a liar public takes work. It can be done, but you might have to move at the pace of a turtle. The slower you move, the more control you will have. You have to give others time to take in the truth.

A. It’s no use crying over spilt milk.    B. Every man has his faults.

C. There is no smoke without fire.    D. Pride goes before a fall.

3.How does the author develop this passage?

A. By listing numbers.

B. By making comparisons.

C. By giving examples.

D. By following order of time.

4.What can we know from the passage?

A. It was true that the grandfather treated his own children cruelly.

B. It is not difficult to persuade a dishonest man into telling the truth.

C. Fred’s boss believed the dishonest employee’s words and fired Fred.

D. To make a liar public, we should figure out effective ways in advance.

Dear Mr. Baker,

Please find below, my impression of the Soundproof Swing concert last Sunday.

I’ve been to a half dozen Soundproof Swing shows in the last few years, but this performance at the Alice Motorplex was the most fascinating I have ever seen. It seemed an old place for a jazz concert, but it was full of energy. I have never seen them so chatty with the crowd! If they were trying to build up harmony, it worked. The audience ate up every note, chord( 和弦), word, and stanza. The atmosphere was simple electric, and the open air was a surprisingly fine compliment(恭敬) to the music, played masterfully as always. A good time was had by all! Check their website(www. Spswing.com) for the next tour stop!

Thanks for the opportunity! Love your magazine!
