During an earthquake, you should need to...

During an earthquake, you should need to know a thing or two on what to do. If the earthquake strikes while you’re inside a house, you should lie on the floor and take cover under a strong table or other furniture. If there is no furniture you can cover your head with your arms and keep still in the corner of the room. You should remain away from windows, glass walls, or anything that can fall.

If you are in bed, stay still. Hold firmly onto your bed and make use of a pillow (枕头) to safeguard your head. You may use a doorway or shelter but only when it is close to you. It should also be considered whether it is strong enough to deal with the load. Do not use lifts, even when they work. Electricity may go out at any time. Many injuries happen when people try to rush out. This means you ought to stay still in your house or perhaps wherever you are.

When you are outdoors, you should be far away from buildings, power wires or lights. You should be in the open until the quake stops. Remember that many earthquake deaths outside the house come from debris (碎片), falling walls, flying glass and other falling objects. If an earthquake strikes and you are driving, you pull up to the side of the highway and stop as quickly as possible. You ought not to stop under trees, buildings or power wires. Don’t stop in the middle of the street since it could trouble others.

When trapped, you shouldn’t move. Your mouth should be covered with a piece of clothing or handkerchief. Do not shout whenever possible. Shouting should be employed at last to get help from rescuers. This is because it is possible for you to breathe some dirty dust.

1.What are you advised to do if you are in bed?

A. We should get up quickly and ask for help.

B. We should stay in bed with a pillow protecting our head.

C. We should get up quickly and rush out of the bedroom.

D. We should get up quickly and find something to protect ourselves.

2.Why are you advised not to use a lift?

A. The lift usually doesn’t work.

B. We will probably be trapped in it.

C. Too many people are using the lift.

D. The building probably will fall down.

3.We can learn from this passage that .

A. some people may be attacked by debris or falling objects

B. when trapped we should shout for help loudly

C. during an earthquake we should stop our car in the middle of the street

D. if an earthquake strikes we should cover our head with a piece of clothing

4.The author writes this passage mainly to tell us .

A. a big earthquake may kill a lot of people

B. the safe ways of preventing an earthquake

C. how we survive an earthquake if it strikes

D. what we should prepare for a big earthquake

第二段中“If you are in bed, stay still. Hold firmly onto your bed and make use of a pillow (枕头) to safeguard your head.” 第二段中的“Do not use lifts, even when they work. Electricity may go out at any time.” 第三段的“Remember that many earthquake deaths outside the house come from debris (碎片), falling walls, flying glass and other falling objects.” 第三段最后一句“If an earthquake strikes and you are driving, …. Don’t stop in the middle of the street since it could trouble others” 不要在街中间停下来,因为它会给别人带来麻烦。 最后一段中的“you can cover your head with your arms and keep still in the corner of the room.” 本段第一句是中心句“During an earthquake, you should need to know a thing or two on what to do.”

When we first moved into our present home, the houses only had a chain-link fence铁丝网围栏)between them. People behind us were older;their children were in their late teens, and we didn’t see them or hear from them much.

Time passed and a younger family moved in. While at first we thought this would be fun for the kids, it quickly became a pain. If one of our children had a birthday party the neighbors would line up their children along the back fence to watch. We would have invited their children if they had been of the same age. While our older children had parties the neighbor’s little kids would shout through the fence the entire time; we knew it was time to get a new fence.

When we built our fence next to the old one, they not only paid nothing for it, but watched us have it built. After we built our fence the mother of the house would call over and ask who was jumping on our trampoline (蹦床). She could only see the tops of their heads and couldn’t figure out who it was. Good people, just too much interest in us. Years later they rebuilt their houses and built a pretty fence between the houses next to the old one. They were not surprised that we didn’t want to pay for it. I have to admit their fence is much prettier than our wooden one.

Our yard is next to four other homes; each of the families has had his own home with a strong fence. We have left ours in place. While we love all our neighbors we are glad we have fences between each of us. Only in this way can we protect our little privacy (隐私), as fences certainly do make good neighbors.

A. The wooden fence looked more beautiful.

B. With the fence his home could become safer.

C. They didn’t want their little privacy to be known.

D. The author’s family didn’t like their new neighbor.

2.How did the mother know the children were jumping on the trampoline?

A. She learned about it by telephoning.

B. She saw the tops of the children’s heads.

C. She heard the sound of the children’s jumping.

D. Her children told her about it.

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The author’s neighbors all have built strong fences.

B. Old people living behind liked children very much.

C. The young neighbors wanted the author to pay for the fence.

D. The young neighbors were very angry about the author’s ugly fence.

4.We can guess from the passage that .

A. the young mother of the house was interested in other families’ life

B. the neighbor of the author started to live there when the author was very young

C. the author thinks that the fences destroy the friendship between the neighbors

D. the author’s family was not a big one when the younger family moved here

When I was 12 years old, my family moved to a slightly nicer neighborhood in the Prince George’s County. I wasn’t happy about the move. I liked my school

and enjoyed riding the school bus; I had befriended (照顾) every dog in my old neighborhood and made good friends with them; and I would miss my special reading tree. Besides, we had only just moved to Maryland the year before.

Still, a new place to explore is always a good thing. Directly in front of our apartment building was a small wooded hill and that immediately became my domain (领地). I named a certain space “Buckingham Palace”, and didn’t allow anyone to disturb me there. A few years after I returned from my university in New Jersey to live in that neighborhood, only on the opposite side of the hill, I was pleased to share my palace with the friends who came to visit.

As I was not permitted to wander far without a good excuse, it took me slightly longer to discover the large field that was over a ridge (山脊) by the road. The field was, after all, in the opposite direction from my school and I had no reason to walk that way.

However, one day I did go off that way and happened to look down into the field and see, to my delight, lots of yellow flowers. The field was simply covered with them. Carefully, I began to climb down the ridge into the field, planning to pick a rose for my mother. Alas, I didn’t get far before the field of flowers rose and flew away. I had seen not a field of flowers but a garden of goldfinches (金翅雀).

1.Before moving to a new neighborhood, the author .

A. planted a reading tree

B. used to go to school on foot

C. moved there just from Maryland

D. got along well with dogs in the neighborhood

2.In his new neighborhood, the author .

A. invited his friends to have a visit

B. made friends with many dogs

C. ran away from the school

D. found a good place and named it “Buckingham Palace”

3.When going near the field beyond the hill, the author .

A. found his school was opposite the field

B. found many goldfinches on the yellow flowers

C. realized what he had seen were goldfinches

D. picked a lot of yellow flowers for his mother

4.What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?

A. Exploring a new neighborhood.

B. One of his strange experiences.

C. The advantages of his new apartment.

D. The move of his family when he was young.

Anthony Marc Robles is a college wrestler (摔跤选手) that many people recognize. This summer he was a featured guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Robles was honored on the 2011 ESPY Awards broadcast with not one but two awards: The Jimmy V Award for Perseverance — named for the late college basketball coach Jim Valvano, and given to a “member of the sporting world who has overcome great difficulties through physical perseverance and determination,” according to ESPN — and Best Male Athlete with a Disability.

Robles did all this, despite having been born without his right leg. Growing up in Mesa, Arizona, Robles was first introduced to wrestling in ninth grade. Despite having a difficult start — with more losses than wins in his first year — Robles set a 129-15 overall record at Mesa High School, winning two Arizona state titles.

Robles said, “I didn’t get into the sport for the attention. I wrestle because I love wrestling. Wrestling helped me to mature. I got so much self-confidence from the sport. I love the sport. But from here on my wrestling competition days are over, and I’ll be focusing on my next goal, which is to be an enthusiastic speaker. I’ll be around wrestling all my life. I love it so much.”

The 22-year-old Robles was even more calm when presented with his Jimmy V Award at the ESPY: “Every soul who comes to the earth with a leg or two at birth must wrestle his opponents (对手), knowing it’s not what is, it’s what can be that measures worth. Do it hard, just make it possible, and I’ll not complain about the pain I have experienced. My spirit is unconquerable (不可征服的). Fearless, I will face each opponent, for I know I am capable. Although there is blood, sweat and tears, I am unstoppable.”

1.When Robles started to take part in competitions at first, _______.

The year 2013 was very bad for my life. Due to illness I had to be in hospital for the first time in my life. Everything went wrong in the work. On personal front, my marriage date was fixed but that guy left me just a week before our engagement. I was almost in depression because of whatever all happened to me. I was struggling to come out of this situation as it was a very bad period of my life.

In those days, I met a guy in the office. This guy was much younger to me but still very soon, we became good friends. We had so much in common that we spent a lot of time talking with each other. On my birthday, he offered to share my birthday evening. It was a lovely evening and I felt so nice. He made my birthday so special that I couldn’t help crying. Very soon, our friendship became stronger and finally we fell in love in just a few days. These days it’s very rare that people get love in return. So I found myself so lucky that I experienced equal love in return. I owe so much to him and don’t know if I would ever be able to repay for what he has done for me. I would like to take this opportunity to tell him “THANK YOU SO MUCH, my dear”.
