Dear Jennifer,

I am writing to thank you. You coming to my birthday party yesterday gave me a big surprise, which I have never expected. You cannot imagine how exciting I was at the moment. To be honesty, it is because of your coming why I feel it is the best birthday I have ever had.

The dictionary you gave me as birthday present is just all what I need. I firmly believe that it will be of great helpful in my English study I cannot thank you enough for what you did for me.

Together with all my classmates, I will do what I can to make you stay in China enjoyable. If there is everything you need, let me know and we will be more than glad to help.

Yours,

Li Hua

To be honest为固定短语,意思为老实说,故将honesty改为honest。 Be of great help 为固定搭配,意为对我很有帮助,且great后并无名词,故将helpful改为help。

A new report says plastics are responsible for $13 billion in damage to the oceans and the undersea environment. The findings were announced recently at a United Nations conference. 1.

Plastic thrown away carelessly makes its way into rivers and other waterways2.After a while, it collects in the sea. And plastic never goes away. Plastic is not biodegradable—destroyed by bacteria or natural processes. Instead, it just breaks up into smaller pieces over time. The oceans contain a lot of chemicals and other pollutants.3.That means harmful material may get into our food supply.

4.Human beings cause pollution and they can take steps to stop it. They can use fewer single use product containers and throw plastics away correctly. Plastic recycling programs also works—where old bottles and other plastics are collected, broken down and used to make new products. We could reuse bottles in our households many times if we wish to, rather than end it after the first use. We could, when we get rid of that plastic, recycle it and reuse it, which replaces the need for raw materials.

The report also calls on companies to improve methods for using plastics. 5.And it calls for information about the way plastic is thrown out or removed from use. By putting a new value on plastic, industry has a special reason to clean up the environment.

But all of the companies must join to deal with the problem.

A. It asks for them to better measure and direct plastic use.

B. But people can make a big difference.

C. Plastics should be gathered together and reused..

D. It is convenient to use plastic bags in everyday life.

E. Then, fish may eat the plastics.

F. The report tells about harm to sea life and what might be done to improve the situation.

G. The plastic eventually reaches coastal areas and ocean waters

Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been shown that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins(维生素) to water without vitamins even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor was added to the vitamins-enriched water, the rats did seem to develop it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.

In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria feeding arrangement, with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns, but over a period of time they managed to select well-balanced diet.

So, in choosing food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Apparently, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long-formed habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.

1.In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the rats’ drinking water to _________.

A. test whether rats know which drink is good for them

B. encourage rats to drink vitamins-enriched water

C. find out rats’ preference in flavor

D. demonstrate the vitamins are tasteless

2.According to the passage, adults eating habits differ from those of babies because _________.

A. adults know better than babies what kind of food are good for their health

B. adults’ eating habits are closely related to the social and cultural customs

C. adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns

D. adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious foods

3.As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that ________.

A. both prefer flavored food and drink

B. both have the same eating patterns

C. both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet

D. both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors

When you are little, the whole world feels like a big playground. I was living in Conyers, Georgia the summer it all happened. I was a second grader, but my best friend Stephanie was only in the first grade. Both of our parents were at work and most of the time they let us go our own way.

It was a hot afternoon and we decided to have an adventure in Stephanie's basement. As I opened the basement door, before us lay the biggest room, full of amazing things like guns, dolls, and old clothes. I ran downstairs, and spotted a red steel can. It was paint. I looked beyond it and there lay even more paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green.

"Stephanie, I just found us a project for the day. Get some paintbrushes. We are fixing to paint. “She screamed with excitement as I told her of my secret plans and immediately we got to work. We gathered all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials to my yard. There on the road in front of my house, we painted big stripes ( 条纹) of colors across the pavement (人行道). Stripe by stripe, our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow. It was fantastic!

The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn't wait to show her my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother’s face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble.

My mother shut the ear door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, "What in the world were you thinking? I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbed the neighbors' trees, but this! Come inside right now!" I stood there glaring back at her for a minute, angry because she had insulted (侮辱) my art.

"Now go clean it up!" Mother and I began cleaning the road. Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement.

Though years have now passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if, maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all need some sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and dreams colorful.

1.What did the writer want to do when his mother came home?

A. To introduce Stephanie to her.    B. To prevent her from seeing his painting.

C. To show his artwork to her.    D. To put the materials back in the yard.

2.In his mother's eyes, the writer _____________.

A. was a born artist    B. worked very hard

C. was a problem solver    D. always caused trouble

3.The underlined word "rainbow" in the last paragraph refers to _____________.

A. something imaginative and fun    B. the stripes on the pavement

C. the rainbow in the sky    D. important lessons learned in childhood

4.It can be learned from the passage that parents should______________ .

A. encourage children to paint    B. value friendship among children

C. protect rather than destroy children's dreams    D. discover the hidden talent in children
