More than half of American teenagers and young adults volunteered last year, and the best way to join in this group turns out to be peer pressure: Three quarters of people ages 13 to 22 whose friends volunteer regularly also do so, which is nearly twice the number of those who participate in voluntary activities based on their concern about particular social
problems. Those were the key findings of new research results published by DoSomething. org, a group working to get young people involved in social change. "
The study, based on data from 4, 363 young people, found that the most common form of support by volunteers was assistance with fundraising. 38 percent of those in the survey said they helped with solicitations (募捐),leading the study's authors to conclude: "Young people are a secret weapon. A persuasive donation speech from an enthusiastic teen is a way more influential than a cold call or that newsletter you were thinking about sending."
The study also found a gender (性另ij) divide in volunteer activities. Boys were more likely to undertake physical activities such as environmental cleanup or working with younger children in sports, while girls were more likely to help the homeless and other needy people or to work with arts groups.
The researchers say the responses to the survey pointed out many ways that nonprofits can do a better job of getting young people to volunteer. Among their suggestions:
Offer ways to socialize. The very first thing that many young people think of in choosing volunteer activities is having a chance to interact with friends, especially those of the opposite sex.
"Think of volunteering like a high-school party," the researchers write. "Volunteering, like everything else, is about joining in, making friends, and having a good time."
1.The passage above mainly talks about ______ .
A. what a research about voluntary activities finds out
B. why young people take part in volunteer work
C. how young people can be persuaded to volunteer
D. where most young volunteers would like to work
2.Most young people are likely to take part in voluntary activities because _____.
A. they are concerned about particular social problems
B. their friends of the same age volunteer
C. they want to influence more people to volunteer
D. their assistance can help those in need
3.At the end of the passage, the writer would probably continue to list _____.
A. more ways for young people to socialize
B. more reasons to get young people to volunteer
C. more tips on getting young people involved in volunteering
D. more differences between different genders in volunteering
The ninth week of SEAL training is referred to as Hell Week. It is on Wednesday of Hell Week that you paddle down to the mud flats (泥滩)and spend the next 15 hours trying to survive the freezing-cold mud, the howling wind and the increasing pressure from the instructors to quit. As the sun began to set that Wednesday evening, my training class, having broken the rules, was ordered into the mud. The mud consumed each man till there was nothing visible but our heads. The instructors told us we could leave the mud if only five men would quit—just five men and we could get out of the extreme cold.
Looking around the mud flat, it was apparent that some students were about to give up. It was still over eight hours till the sun came up--eight more hours of freezing cold. The chattering teeth and shivering moans (呻吟)of the trainees were so loud it was hard to hear anything. And then, one voice began to echo (回荡)through the night--one voice raised in song. The song was terribly out of tune, but sung with great enthusiasm. One voice became two, and two became three, and before long everyone in the class was singing. We knew that if one man could rise above the great suffering then others could as well. The instructors threatened us with more time in the mud if we kept up the singing—but the singing went on. And somehow, the mud seemed a little warmer, the wind a little less bitter and the dawn not so far away.
If I have learned anything in my time traveling the world it is the power of hope. The power of one person, Washington, Lincoln, King, Mandela and even a young girl from Pakistan, Malala, can change the world by giving people hope.
So, if you want to change the world, start singing when you're up to your neck in mud.
1.From the passage, we can see that being ordered into the mud was _____ .
A. the last part of the training
B. the most useful part of the training
C. the real test of the trainees' intelligence
D. the punishment for the training class
2.The training class' singing together ______ .
A. helped them to kill the time
B. encouraged them to fight their difficulty
C. inspired the instructors
D. kept them from falling into the mud
3.The writer described his SEAL training experience mainly to tell the readers _____ .
A. the power of a large crowd of people
B. the advantage of the training
C. the way to bring about changes
D. the reason to promote singing
4.In the last paragraph, the phrase "up to your neck in mud" most probably means ______ .
A. in an extremely difficult situation
B. in a hard training class
C. in terribly cold weather
D. in a lower social position

What is waste and why does it matter?
Waste or rubbish is something that people throw away because they no longer need it or want it. Almost everything we do creates waste and as a society we are currently producing more waste than ever before. We do this at home and at work. The fact that we produce waste, and get rid of it, matters for the following reasons.
When something is thrown away we lose the natural resources, the energy and the time which have been used to make the product. The vast majority of resources that we use in manufacturing products and providing services cannot be replaced. The use of these resources cannot go on indefinitely— we would run out.
When something is thrown away, we are putting pressure on the environment's ability to cope— in terms of the additional environmental impacts associated with extracting the new resources, manufacturing and distributing the goods, and in terms of the environmental impacts associated with getting rid of our rubbish.
When something is thrown away, we are not able to see it as a resource. It is well understood that what is waste to one person may not be viewed as waste by another. A good example of this is scrap metal(金属废料)which has been recycled for many years. Increasingly people are realizing that it makes economic sense as well as environmental sense to use "waste" rather than just throw it away.
The process of using up the earth's natural resources to make products which we then throw away, sometimes a very short time later, is not "sustainable" — in other words, it cannot continue indefinitely.
The way we consume materials will affect whether we have a sustainable society that leaves resources available for future generations to use. As consumers and producers, we are central to the concept of sustainability. We need to think about how we can get more out of less, how we can use less and throw away less and how we can do better things with our so-called "waste" than throw it away. We need to see "waste" as a "resource".

Increasingly, people are realizing that it makes both economic sense and environmental sense to use "waste" 7.of just throwing it away. |
Result | We’ll leave fewer resources 8. for future generations to use. |
9. | People should have the 10. of sustainability, thinking about getting more out of less, using less, throwing less and doing better things with it. People should see "waste" as a "resource". |
Maybe it is true that we do not know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives.
It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return; but if it does not, be content it has grown in yours. Do not rely on one’s appearance; it can trick you. Do not rely on wealth; even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trails to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. The happiest of people do not necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. Always put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
