Winter care for roses

Do roses need extra care for winter? Like so many other things in the garden, the answer is debatable. 1.

Roses are grouped and referred to by type. Shrub roses are the hardiest and need little extra care. Hybrid tea roses and other roses are more likely to need winterization to survive or remain healthy.

2. And even shrub roses exposed to severe winter conditions can suffer. If roses are growing in a location that is subject to heavy winter winds, even the hardiest varieties may benefit from winterization.

Some gardeners live by the theory that if a plant can't grow well, the best bet is to replace it. 3. If you wish to do nothing with your roses, you also have chances of having plants around in the spring. If you like to baby plants along, winterization is for you.

Winterize roses after a hard freeze and cold weather. The first step is to add soil or other plant material over the crown(花冠)of the rose bush. The material should be about 12 inches deep over the crown. The second step to winterizing roses is to tie up the plants. 4. If the plants are tall, use ropes to provide support to them.

When spring comes, remove the added soil from the base of the plant. 5. This is the time to clean up cuts and reduce plant size if desired.

A.Location also plays a role, though.

B.Remove strings if plants have been tied up.

C.So they often change the plants they grow.

D.Other gardeners have plants that are almost like children.

E.You should consider sunshine and water when answering this question.

F.The main purpose is to prevent them from breaking off in the face of strong winds.

G.It depends on the plant variety, growing location and a gardener's personal preference.

Children make quicker decisions to eat “tasty” food and reward centres in their brains light up after watching food commercials on television, compared to nonfood commercials, a small study finds.

The researchers studied 23 children aged 8 to 14 who gave taste and health ratings for 60 food items. Afterwards, kids chose whether to “eat” or “not eat” each food item—without actually eating them—while undergoing brain scans. The scans measure changes in blood flow within the brain, which is thought to reflect the activity of brain cells.

While the kids were making their decisions, they were periodically shown TV commercials, some for fast food outlets and some for nonfood businesses. Each set of commercials was followed by a set of 10 food choices.

In general, kids did not choose foods based on their health ratings and chose based on taste. But after watching a food commercial, taste seemed even more important to them and they made their choices faster. The area of the brain involved in reward valuation was more active during food decisions after watching foodrelated commercials than after nonfood commercials.

“What we know from studies like this one is that food marketing has effects that go beyond simply increasing our liking or wanting of the product being advertised and actually affect our preferences for all foods in that category,” said Emma Boyland of the University of Liverpool.

“Parents should be aware of these results so that they can put limits on screen time that involves food advertising,” Bruce said. “They should also discuss with children the importance of thinking about commercials properly.” “But commercials are almost everywhere—television, online, radio, clothing. As adults, we have to work to teach children that a real healthy diet to support a full and active life contains very little of the food they see advertised,”Boyland said.

1.What were the children asked to do in the research?

A. Select favourite commercials.    B. Decide whether to eat or not to eat.

C. Observe the activity of brain cells.    D. List health ratings for some foods.

2.What happened to the children after watching food commercials?

A. The reward centres in their brains acted actively.

B. They made food choices based on health ratings.

C. They confused taste rating with health rating of the foods.

D. They had a good command of the methods to choose foods.

3.What can we infer from Boyland's words?

A. Food marketing should be strictly controlled.

B. It's hard to stop kids being exposed to food advertising.

C. Parents should forbid children to watch food commercials.

D. Children should be warned not to eat the advertised foods.

4.What is mainly talked about in the passage?

A. Children make decisions quickly when watching commercials.

B. Children's bad eating habits are mainly caused by food commercials.

C. Parents are concerned about the effect of food advertisements on kids.

D. Food advertisements can have a great effect on children's eating habits.

Does every important present come in a big package? As the holiday season approaches, most of us are looking for the perfect gift, ready to give whatever we can afford, hoping to please the ones we love.

This morning, my son responded to my email, in which I had mentioned his Christmas list. To my surprise, he didn't tell me what was on his list—rather he opted to tell what was not, such as more sweaters or buttondowns.

“I have 3x more of shirts than I could ever possibly wear,” he wrote.

I laughed, not only at my silly assumption but also at the frank and sensitive way he'd told me I'd been missing the boat. In my attempts to be generous, I'd merely been repetitive.

It hurts to admit this naturally, but the truth is that if I'd been visiting him more frequently, I'd know he has too many shirts in his drawers with the tags still on them. But because he is living so far away, I just don't know what exactly he wears on a daily basis.

Perhaps if I paid him and his wife a visit, we could share takeout in their apartment. Laugh together. Talk about something. It would be a big gift in a small package, requiring only a plane flight and some time.

Of course, this present could come at any time of the year. I am thinking about the idea now because it's December, when thinking about perfect presents for those we love occupies our thoughts quite a bit. We are troubling ourselves with the idea of perfection, sometimes losing sight of the point of it all, which is simply to make one another happy.

So maybe under our Christmas tree this year there will be a package wrapped in red and green with my son's name on it. Inside will be a plane ticket to JFK in my name. Wouldn't that be perfect?

1.What did the author realize after reading her son's email?

A. Her son didn't think she was generous.

B. She ignored her son's inner feelings.

C. She missed out her son's development.

D. She didn't buy her son proper presents.

2.Which of following can best replace the underlined word “opted” in Paragraph 2?

A. Chose.    B. Promised.

C. Refused.    D. Pretended.

3.What might be the best title for the passage?

A. Small presents also count    B. Presents—symbol of love

C. Big presents in little packages    D. Presents—a bond between people

Imagine a mystery guest coming to your Thanksgiving dinner, one you have never met. Imagine this “silent guest” being a starving person from a poor country. That is what students at Mount St. Joseph University in Ohio want you to think about this Thanksgiving.

Students of the Mount's Impact Club are urging everyone to feed a “silent guest” at this year's Thanksgiving. These students have been holding fundraisers for the World Food Programme (WFP) and trying to get people to join their “silent guest” plan.

Their idea came from the “silent guest” campaign in 1947, which asked Americans to open up their hearts and share their Thanksgiving abundance. Governor Robert Bradford of Massachusetts, whose forefather started Thanksgiving, announced the new tradition of feeding a “silent guest” at the holiday meal.

American families were asked to donate the cost of feeding their “silent guest” to a committee in Massachusetts. The “silent guest” donations from Americans led to CARE packages of food being sent to starving families overseas. This was important for many countries in Europe, who were still suffering from the destruction caused by World War .

The food from the “silent guest” helped keep Europe afloat until Marshall Plan to rebuild could kick in. As George Marshall said, “Food is the very basis of all reconstruction.”

The “silent guest” idea was started by an activist named Iris Gabriel. She approached Governor Bradford, with the plan and eventually governors across the US were on board. This was a giving spirit.

It is a spirit we must keep with us today because the WFP and other relief agencies are facing an incredible challenge with hunger emergencies. Fighting world hunger is no less important than it was in 1947.

That is why it's inspiring that college students are leading the campaign to bring back the “silent guest”. And you can join them by simply setting aside a place in your heart and your holiday table while donating to a charity fighting hunger.

1.What gave the students the idea of “silent guest”?

A. A historical fact.    B. Their rich imagination.

C. A moving story.    D. A TV programme.

2.What can we know about the “silent guest” campaign in 1947?

A. It was a worldwide campaign.

B. It helped the development of the US.

C. It was originally put forward by the WFP.

D. It contributed a lot to Europe's rebuilding.

3.What might be the spirit of the “silent guest” campaign?

A. Giving is a virtue.    B. Give thanks by giving.

C. Give respect to the poor.    D. Giving is better than receiving.

4.What should people do according to the “silent guest” plan?

A. Invite your friends to Thanksgiving dinner.

B. Act as a silent guest to show thanks to people.

C. Raise money for the World Food Programme.

D. Provide shelter to a silent guest on Christmas.
