Boys and girls: We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can get rid of them correctly and wisely. First of all, some of us are upset about their figures and looks. Personally, I argue that it is one's inner beauty that really matters. That is why we needn't care about it. Second, when we are misunderstood by our teachers, parents or even classmates, we can find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, as communication is the best way to remove misunderstandings. Some of us complain they have few true friends. Being open-minded and ready to help others will surely gain popularity among peers. Third, we may fall behind others, which makes us stressed. Determined to work efficiently, we can overcome any difficulty. If necessary, we may turn to the teachers for help. Last, some of us don't have much pocket money, so they feel unhappy. Isn't it strange? So long as we have some, that's enough. We high school students should learn to save, as saving is a good virtue of the Chinese, shouldn’t we? That's all. Thank you. We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can get rid of them correctly and wisely. but表示转折关系;I argue that it is one's inner beauty that really matters.强调句式经典至极;That is why we needn't care about it. Do you love traveling? If the answer is yes, then have you ever thought about why? You may argue that traveling can help you enrich your knowledge, especially geographical and historical learning. It will provide more chances for you to enjoy food and try on clothes that you otherwise cannot possible have. A famous English author Francis Bacon (1561-1626) makes a point when he says that, “Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience.”

Evidence of leisure travel can be traced as far back as ancient Babylon. This year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the 1 billionth tourist will cross an international boundary before the end of this month. That means that one in seven people on the planet traveled this year, something that would not have been possible a few decades ago. Around 20 years ago only the rich could travel.

While the US and France remain the two largest destinations for world travel, experts say much of the explosive growth in tourism has been to countries like Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and the Ivory Coast, which weren’t even on the world tourism map a decade ago. The top five destinations in the world, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, are Paris, London, New York, the Mediterranean, Turkey.

Several factors have led to the boom in world travel. The prosperity (富裕) of people in Asia is one factor. People in Asian developing countries have lifted their incomes above middle-class levels in the past few years. And a lot of them have used their new wealth to travel. In addition, travel costs have been reduced thanks to the rapid development of transportation, and competition between airlines to give customers the best prices.

Everyone gathered around and Paddy read out loud, slowly, his tone growing sadder and sadder. The little headline said: BOXER RECEIVES LIFF SENTENCE.

Frank Cleary, aged 26, professional boxer, was today found guilty of the murder of Albert Gumming, aged 32, laborer, last July. The jury(陪审团) reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe punishment to the court. It was, said the Judge, a simple case. Cumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Gumming. When arrested, Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking.

Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour. Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered, “Just don’t tell my mother.”

“It happened over three years ago,” Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do. “Just don’t tell my mother,” said Fee numbly(麻木地). “And no one did! Oh, God! My poor, poor Frank!”

Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said. “Fee, pack your things. We’ll go to see him.”

She half-rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead. “I can't go,” she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there. “It would kill him to see me. I know him so well—his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone, it’s what he wants. We’ve got to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us?”

Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee’s face, for the dying in her eyes. Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children. Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank took it away. But Paddy’s love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank.

So he said, “Well, Fee, we won’t go. But we must make sure he is taken care of. How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?”

There was no excitement in the eyes, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks. “Yes, Paddy, do that. Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out. Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don’t know.”

A. what had happened to Frank was killing Fee

B. Frank should have told Fee what had happened

C. Frank did kill someone and deserved the punishment

A. Fee was so heart-broken that she could hardly stand up

B. Fee didn’t want to upset Paddy by visiting Frank

C. Fee struggled between wanting to see Frank and respecting his wish

D. Fee couldn’t leave her family to go to see Frank

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. The jury and the judge agreed on the Boxer’s Sentence of Life Imprisonment.

B. Frank didn’t want his family to know the sentence to him, most probably out of his pride.

C. The family didn’t find out what had happened to Frank until 3 years later.

D. The police found Gumming unconscious, heavily struck by Frank.

4.What is Frank and Paddy’s probable relationship with Fee?

A. Frank is Fee’s son and Paddy is Fee’s brother.

B. Frank is Fee’s lover and Paddy is Fee’s husband.

C. Frank is Fee’s brother and Paddy is Fee’s lover.

D. Frank is Fee’s son and Paddy is Fee’s husband.

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.

Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.

The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate(价钱). From then on, they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly(相应地).

With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.

In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?

1.While taking a taxi in Finland, ________.

A. a passenger can go anywhere without having to pay the driver

B. a passenger can never be turned down by the taxi driver wherever he wants to go

C. a passenger pays two US dollars for a taxi ride

D. a passenger needs to provide good faith demonstration (证明) before leaving without paying

2.We know from the passage that big hotels in Finland ________.

A. provide meals for any diners

B. are mostly poorly managed

C. provide free wine and charge for food

D. provide meal for only those who live in the hotels

3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The workers in Finland are paid by the hour.

B. The workers are always honest with their working hours.

C. The bosses in Finland are too busy to check the working hours of their employees.

D. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay.

4.The word “those” in the last but one paragraph probably refers to ________.

A. people who are worthy of trust

B. people who often have meals in big hotels

C. people who often take taxis

D. people who are dishonest

Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her every success. But part of me didn’t. I actually wanted her to fail in some ways because I believe that failure can be good for our learning process. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be a problematic (存在问题的) victory. First-time success is usually a fluke (侥幸). First-time failure, however, is supposed to be the natural order of things. Failure is how we learn.

In Africa they describe a good cook as “She who has broken many pots.” If you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of pots, probably you know a fair amount about cooking. I once had dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much credibility (可信) their failures gave them.

I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each week I know that one column I write is going to be the worst column. I try my best every day. I have learned to love that column. A successful column usually means that I am discussing my familiar topic, writing in a style I am used to or saying the same things as anyone else but in a better way.

My younger daughter is a trapeze artist (荡秋千演员). She spent three years practising a show, and she did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change it but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored. And if she was bored, there was no point in subjecting (使……服从于) her body to all that stress. She risked failure and great public embarrassment in order to feed her soul.

My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures, and I will want to comfort her. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do better next time. I hope I can tell her, though, that it’s not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.

1.Why did the author want his granddaughter to fail?

A. She would learn more from failure.

B. He wanted her to be strong enough to face hardships.

C. It’s impossible to do everything successfully.

D. Success is boring though good.

2.What’s the author’s attitude toward his daughter changing her show?

A. Negative.B. Worried.C. Anxious.D. Positive.

3.The author develops the article mainly by ________.

A. following the time order

B. giving examples

C. comparing different opinions

D. giving a cause and analyzing its effects

4.The writer talked about his own experience to show that ________.

A. past failures made him dare not take risks in writing

B. we should try every possible way to avoid failure

C. the thought of failure will make you work even harder

D. we cannot depend on luck to live a good life
