We all see and hear about extraordinary ...

We all see and hear about extraordinary people around us and wonder why we can’t be more like them. It’s not the big things that make someone extraordinary. Here are some small things that extraordinary people do every day:

  1.  That you’re the boss doesn’t mean you are right every time. Learn to back up your decisions with reason. Use logic(逻辑) to explain things, not authority. By doing this your decisions might invite criticism, but you will also get an opportunity to improve.

●They are generous with compliments(恭维). Remember the time, when you worked really hard but got nothing in return? Not even a thank- you.__ 2._So every chance you get to praise someone, do it. A simple, “That was some great work, keep it up,” can go a long way in making the employees feel great about themselves.  3.

●They are helpful. Never hesitate to help someone. It’s fairly simple but it goes a long way. Don’t say something vague(含糊)like, “Can I help you?” because they might just say, “No, I’m good.”    4.  “I had the same problem with this coffee machine in the morning. I think I have figured a way to make it work.” Offer in a way that feels mutually beneficial .

●They’re in charge of their emotions. Sometimes it is very important to stay silent. Especially when you’re angry, you don’t want to end up saying things you didn’t really mean to. So they take their time to think about what happened, and then come to a decision about how to deal with it.   5.  Never be too casual with words or actions.

A. They are sensitive to others.

B. The key is to be specific.

C. A compliment can have a positive impact on their lives.

D. When you feel awkward receiving a compliment, give the person a smile.

E. They are open to criticism.

F. It hurts when your efforts are not recognized.

G. Before you say anything, consider others’ feelings.

“Beating is a sign of affection, cursing (骂)is a sign of love.”

Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern times—with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been—but experts say they still ring true.

Today, it seems, Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to precollege military academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success.

“Good education doesn’t mean letting your children enjoy privileges, especially our boys.” said Song Wenming, an entrepreneur (企业家)in Jinhua’ East China’s Zhejiang province. “They should be raised in tough conditions to know what to fight for in the future.”

In August, Song sent his 17yearold son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money—around $48,000 per year—to send a child to a strict military school.

Statistics show that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies.

A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28.“All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families; some of them were spoiled.” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.

Song’s only son, Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult.

Now, three months later, he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism, no matter how unreasonable.

“The training is hard but I know it is good for selfdevelopment of individuals.” said Song Siyu. “The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character; they are not personal.”

But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools.

But for those who stick with it, there is a reward for all the hard work.

Telepathy (心灵感应) is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It's an instinct (本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we're using resources within the unconscious mind. When the resources of two persons' unconscious minds link together into the same frequency (频率), we call it telepathy.

We can either send or receive telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you,you are most likely to be better at sending.

You can easily put your ability to the test. Thinking of somebody and wish him or her to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try ‘feeling’ who is contacting you. Don't guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However,if neither of these works for you, that doesn't mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.

Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams have a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other's unconscious mind.

Telepathy & relationship. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other's mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other's mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child's eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this is the person who would always want to be there for them, and the mother's deep desire to protect her child from harm.

1.Telepathy happens when one ________.

A. has a similar dream with another person.

B. is good at guessing

C. wants to call his/her best friend

D. doesn't know a stranger

2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The more people separate, the more likely that telepathy will occur in their life.

B. Telepathy occurs when people make use of their five senses.

C. Telepathy happens when people live far away and have no chance to see one another again.

D. One is better at sending than receiving telepathy if one receives a friend’s call as one wishes.

3.Which of the following belongs to telepathy?

A. Your action in your dream.

B. People's communication over the telephone.

C. A mother's sense of her child being in danger.

D. A couple's long separation.

4.Which one can be the title of the passage?

A. Receiving Telepathy               B. Dream of telepathy

C. Telepathy: People’s Dream         D. Mind-to-Mind Contact

Blind tasting is a very strange activity. Contrary to what many people imagine, it has nothing to do with blindfolds. It involves tasting a wine without seeing the label and it can deliver shocking surprises. I tasted seven champagnes (香槟) blind with a group of professionals recently. There was a shock when they discovered the wine most of them preferred carried a label they regarded as their least favorite. That sort of result is especially common with champagne, the most image-driven rather than quality-driven wine of all. But it happens all the time when wine is tasted blind.

Because I’m interested in how wines really taste instead of how I think they should, I taste wine blind as often as I can, especially when assessing similar young wines. But blind tasting when you know absolutely nothing about the wine in front of you is something completely different. The most difficult Master of Wine exams include three sessions during which you have a dozen glasses in front of you and nothing more helpful than a printed exam paper asking you to identify each wine as closely as possible, and assess its quality.

Now that the MW is behind me, I taste wine completely blind only very rarely, and never in public. So my blind tastings these days are round the dinner table with good friends and once a year when I act as a judge, with Hugh Johnson, in the Oxford vs Cambridge wine-tasting competition. This is the most extraordinary match, always held before the Boat Race but taken just as seriously nowadays. This year’s taste-off took place at the end of last month, as usual in the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall in London.

1.Which of the following is true about Blind tasting?

A. Blind tasting is the professional way to identify a wine.

B. Blind tasting usually has the right result.

C. Blind tasting means tasting a wine with one’s eyes covered.

D. Blind tasting is tasting a wine without seeing the label.

2.Why did the professionals get shocked at the result of their blind tasting?

A. They got all the results correctly.

B. They didn’t recognize their favorite at all.

C. The writer made no mistakes.

D. Champagnes can not be tasted blind.

3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. The Boat Race is taken more seriously than the wine race.

B. The Oxford v Cambridge wine-tasting competition is held annually.

C. I didn’t act as a judge last year.

D. Pall Mall is chosen as the competition place for the first time.

Once Dr. Mellinkoff invited me to join him at the hospital to discuss interesting cases with his students. The case at hand was a Guatemalan man, aged 34, who had a fever and many other medical problems. His condition was not improving, and there was not much hope he would live.

Dr. Mellinkoff asked to see the patient. He introduced himself in Spanish and, in a very gentle voice, asked how he felt. The patient smiled and said everything was all right. Then the doctor asked if he was able to eat. The patient said that he had no desire to eat.

Are you getting food you like?

The patient said nothing.

Do you get the kind of food you have at home?

The answer was no.

The doctor put his hand on the man’s shoulder and his voice was very soft.

“If , you had food that you liked , would you eat it?

“Yes , yes. the patient said.

The change in the patient’s appearance couldn’t have been more obvious. Nothing was said, but it was easy to tell that a message had been sent and had also been received.

Later, the doctor asked why the Guatemalan man wasn’t getting food he could eat. One of the students said, We all know how difficult it is to get the kitchen to make special meals.

Suppose, the doctor replied, you felt a certain medicine was absolutely necessary but that our hospital didn’t carry it, would you accept defeat or would you insist the hospital meet your request?

I would probably insist, the student said.

Very well, the doctor said. You might want to try the same method in the kitchen. It won’t be easy, but I can help you. Meanwhile, let’s get some food inside this man as fast as possible, and stay with it. Or he’ll be killed by hunger. By the way, there must be someone among you who can speak Spanish. If we want to make real progress, we need to be able to talk with him.

Three weeks later, Dr. Mellinkoff told me that the Guatemalan man had left the hospital under his own power. It takes more than medicine to help sick people; you also have to talk to them and make them comfortable.

1.The patient had no desire to eat because __________.

D. he was not satisfied with the food

2.According to the passage , we can conclude that __________.

A. the patient was from another country .

B. the patient’s illness was caused by hunger

C. Dr. Mellinkoff performed an operation on the patient

D. the hospital failed to provide the right medicine for the patient

3.Which of the following words can be used to describe Dr. Mellinkoff ?

A. Cold.

B. Considerate.

C. Curious .

D. Confident.

4.What do you think Dr. Mellinkoff wanted to tell his students in this case?

A. Doctors should know their patients’ real problems.

C. Doctors should try to improve their medical skills.

D. Doctors should give more medicine to patients.
