Did you know that if you need an alarm clock to wake up in the morning, you’re probably sleep-deprived (缺失)? __1._______ . On average, American teens get two hours less than the average 9.2 hours of sleep they need each night to function at their best.

There are many reasons why teens don’t get enough sleep. ____2.______ . When your parents were young, they might have read a book or watched television before trying to go to sleep. But today’s teens are likely to be surfing the Internet, texting, emailing, or playing video games right before bed. ___3._____ . And using them right before bed can result in difficulty getting to sleep. According to a survey by the National Sleep Foundation, teens with four or more electronic equipment in their rooms are much more likely than their peers to get an insufficient amount of sleep at night, and are almost twice as likely to fall asleep in school and while doing homework.

___4.______ . In the National Sleep Foundation survey, three-quarters of the teens took  at least one drink with caffeine every day, and nearly one-third consumed two or more every day. With all the trendy “high-energy” drinks and coffees out there right now, it’s easy to get a caffeine overload and that’s not good for sleep.

So what can you do if you’re in lack of sleep? “The good news is that you only have to make up about a third of what you have lost, to function and feel better,” says Dr. Mahowald at a sleep disorders center. ____5.______ . But sleeping until noon on the weekend can cause problems you’ll likely be wide-eyed until late those nights. Instead, try keeping a reasonable, regular sleeping and waking schedule.

B.Those extra two hours of sleep on Saturday and Sunday mornings can really help.

C.Most teens don’t get enough sleep.

D.Many teens also drink too much caffeine to sleep well.

E.Electronic devices are more exciting than simply watching television.

F.Researchers also have found that biology plays a role in teens’ sleep patterns.

G.Many school districts are shifting their start times to later morning for school students.

A dog might be man’s best friend, but my dogs are more like my kids! I think everyone should experience the unconditional love of a dog, but owning one is not for the nervousness. It’s work—especially when it comes to the job of cleaning up their waste. When you clean up after your dogs, your neighbors will love you for keeping those smelly landmines out of their yards. But there are even bigger benefits. You’ll not only be doing your part to keep bacteria out of your yard and neighborhood, you’re also keeping harmful microorganisms away from the drinking water supply.

There are more than 77 million pet dogs in the United States and their waste is found in backyards, neighborhood parks, and the green areas that frequently line small waterways. When you don’t clean up after your dog, heavy rain can carry bacteria from the waste into drains. Dog waste left in parks and other such places can be swept directly into nearby streams. This affects the quality of the water in our streams. These small channels often empty directly into our local drinking water supply or the water where we boat or fish.

Dog waste contains harmful microorganisms like roundworms that can be passed onto humans. This is why dog waste should not be used as fertilizer around your home. And it won’t fertilize your yard either if you leave it behind like other types of fertilizer. Dogs don’t eat the same kinds of natural material that cattle, horses or even elephants eat. The waste from those animals is actually beneficial for your yard and garden.

You should always pick up after your dog and throw the waste into the trash can. Some smaller cities might prefer the waste to be washed down the toilet, but in cities where there are many dogs, it’s best to send the waste to the landfill.

When you properly deal with your dog’s waste, you’ll be doing your part to keep harmful bacteria out of your yards, your neighborhoods and your drinking water.

1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A. The author’s dog is as lovely as a child.

B. Dog waste can pollute the environment.

C. Owning a dog is a troublesome experience.

D. Dog waste is more harmful than landmines.

2.Which shows the right organization of the passage?

(P1 = Paragraph 1; P2 = Paragraph 2; P3 = Paragraph 3; P4 = Paragraph 4; P5 = Paragraph 5)

3.Which of the following statements about dog waste is true?

A. It makes a kind of natural fertilizer of high quality.

B. The microorganisms in dog waste are helpful to water.

C. It is better to wash dog waste down a toilet or bury it in a landfill.

D. Dog waste is more beneficial to soil than other kinds of animal waste.

4.What is the main purpose of this passage?

A. To scold those who ignore their dog’s waste.

B. To introduce ways of cleaning up dog waste.

C. To warn dog owners about the danger of dog waste.

D. To argue it is the duty of the owners to clean up dog waste.

“Tiger Mother” parenting raises media storm. A new book written by a self-described Chinese descent(血统) on her super-strict parenting—Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother has raised media storm and fierce debates in the U.S.

Amy Chua is a Yale Law School professor and the mother of two teenage girls. She is the daughter of immigrants of Chinese descent. In the Chinese culture, the tiger symbolizes strength and power. In her book Ms.Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. For example, her daughters,Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to attend a sleep-over,be in a school play, watch TV or play computer games. They couldn’t choose their own after-class activities or get any grade less than an A.They had to play piano or violin—and no other musical instruments. She writes that if a Chinese child gets a B—which she says would never happen”—there would be a screaming, hairtearing explosion”.She describes making her 7-year-old daughter play a piano piece perfectly—yelling and not letting her leave the bench even to use the bathroom—until it was.

Many people have criticized Chua. Some say her parenting methods were abusive. She even admits that her husband, who is not Chinese, objects to her parenting style. But she says that was the way her parents raised her and her three sisters.

Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books about parenting, says Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. She says it represents a traditional way of parenting among immigrants seeking a better future for their children. But she also sees a risk. When children have no time to be social or to follow their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. Stacy DeBroff advised parents not to just repeat the way they were raised.

Alison Lo,an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Washington’s Bothell campus said, “I don’t think Amy is advocating a best practice of parenting style, or that success and achievements are critical yardsticks(衡量标准) of a good life. But I can imagine how strong her daughters’ college applications are going to be. For many parents whose dreams are seeing their kids graduating from a competitive university,Amy is sharing with the readers that it is achievable by persistent, dedicated parental guidance,”Lo said in an interview with Julie Muhlstein,a columnist with the US-based Heraldnet.com.“In that sense,a young adult’s giftedness can be born,or made,”Lo continued.

1.According to the passage, which is TRUE of Amy Chua?

A.She is an easy-going woman.

B.She is an assistant professor.

C.She is a demanding parent.

D.She is a cruel teacher.

2.Which of the following are Sophia and Louisa allowed to do?

A.Playing the piano.

B.Playing the guitar.

C.Dating with boys.

D.Getting an A minus.

3.Stacy DeBroff advised parents to ________.

A.seek a better future for their children

B.develop their own style of parenting

C.be strict with their children

D.follow Amy Chua’s parenting style

4.Alison Lo concluded that ________.

A.persistent, dedicated parental guidance is the best parenting style

B.parents should respect children’s personalities

C.a gifted child was born with talent

D.a teenager can be raised to be talent by strict parenting
