Vegetarian UK

Vegetarians and vegans

Vegetarians (people who don’t eat meat) and vegans (people who don’t eat or use any animal products) are becoming increasingly common in UK culture.   1.  A recent survey showed that three million people were vegetarian. Visit a British supermarket and you will see a wide range of vegetarian ingredients and prepared meals on the shelves, including vegetarian sausages and vegan cheese.

2._________

So why are Brits cutting out meat? Many are unhappy about the poor treatment of animals and the effects of meat and fish production on the environment. Worries about food safety (for example BES or “mad cow disease”) also play a part.    3.   According to the Vegetarian Society, a meat-free diet could help reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease, as well as obesity and high blood pressure.

Organic farming

Another rising trend is in how UK food is produced. Many people are rejecting GM (genetically modified) food and intensive farming practices. They want their food to be organically produced. Organic farmers use very few or no chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers and organic meat is produced without the use of drugs and antibiotics.    4.

Organic food

According to the Soil Association, three out of every four UK households now buy some type of organic food. Some get organic meat, fruit and vegetables from farmers’ markets, where products are sold directly to the consumer. Others have a box of organic fruit and vegetables sent to their homes every week. 5. Although it’s often more expensive, fans of organic food say it tastes much better!

A. A healthy diet

B. A balanced diet

C. Many people buy organic products in their local supermarket.

D. More and more people are deciding not to eat meat or use animal products.

E. A healthy soil reduces disease and helps crops grow strong and healthy.

F. Others choose to change their eating habits to improve their general health.

G. Organically farmed animals also have more living space and more nutritious food.

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.

It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend(倾向) to forget how they themselves felt when young.

For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Old people worry more easily. Most of them plan things in advance, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.

When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.

Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents don’t like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.

Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.

If you prefer to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

1.According to the text, young people prefer to __________.

A. ask for advice before they really start to do anything

B. think in the same way as their parents do

C. be very strict with themselves

D. do things without thinking carefully ahead

2.Why do young people like to have clothes, entertainment and music in their way?

A. Because they want to try on something new and look different from the older.

B. Because they try to get their parents to be proud of them.

C. Because they want to give their parents a big surprise.

D. Because they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.

3.According to the text, young people want to make a new culture of their own, because _________.

A. they feel they are cleverer than old people

B. they do not want to get into trouble with their parents

C. they don’t feel they belong to the world of the old people

D. they want to show the new is better than the old

4.If a young man intends to control his own life, it’s better for him to __________.

A. do everything according to his own wish

B. hold himself responsible for everything he does

C. do everything beyond his parents’ control

D. do everything the way his parents do

Body Language in the United States

Most people shake hands and make eye contact when they meet people for the first time. Among very good friends, a woman may give another woman a little hug, and a man may kiss a woman quickly on the cheek. Males don’t hug one another, which, however, is changing. Men usually shake hands with the right hand. Sometimes they use the left hand to either cover the handshake or lightly hold the other person’s arm. This shows greater warmth and friendship. Most people wave hello or good-bye by extending the palm(手掌) facing outward, and twisting the hand at the wrist. Another way is to raise the arm, palm outward, and move the whole arm and hand back and forth. This is important to know because in many other countries, the same movements mean “no”.

When people are waiting in a public place, such as the post office, they usually form lines. Some people get angry and complain if someone pushes their way into a line or jumps ahead of other people. Moreover, many women like men to open doors for them. They also like men to give up their seats on public transportation. However, some women do not like this type of behavior. They feel that men and women should be treated in the same way.

In the United States, it’s important to make direct eye contact in business and social situations. If you don’t make eye contact, people will probably think that you are bored or not interested. If there is silence in these situations, people usually try to make conservation. Periods of silence make many people uncomfortable. People in the United States usually stand about one arm’s length away from each other while talking or standing together. This space is called “the comfort zone”.

In the United States, mothers sometimes show that they are angry with children by shaking an index finger(食指) at them. People may show that they like children by patting them on the head.

1.It can be inferred from Paragraph 1 that in the United States __________.

A. males begin to hug each other now

B. a man usually kisses a woman for greeting

C. people only use right hands to shake hands

D. people wave good-bye as people in many other countries do

2.Some women don’t like to be offered a seat by men because __________.

A. they think sitting is harmful for health

B. they prefer to stand rather than sit

C. they like to be treated equally

D. they don’t need men’s favor

3.The third paragraph is mainly about __________.

A. body language in public places

B. impolite body language

C. the comfort zone

D. body language in business and social life

4.In the United States, a mother sometimes shakes an index finger at her kids to show __________.

A. boredom            B. anger          C. love         D. Satisfaction
