Man has been to the moon. It has been the first step towards future exploration in space. When compared with the distances between Earth and the other planets, the distance between the Moon and Earth is very short indeed. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away! Traveling to the planets will be man’s next step. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more exciting and dangerous. Recently, two American spaceships, Viking 1 and 2, landed on Mars trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither been confirmed nor ruled out (排除). Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as those we have on Earth, but man should realize Earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.
1.Based on the passage, traveling to the planets will be ___________.
A. man’s first step
B. much easier and even more interesting
C. for more exciting and dangerous
D. man’s final aim
2.Which of the following is Not true?
A. Mars is nearer to the earth than the moon.
B. The moon is much nearer to the earth than Mars.
C. Of all the planets, Mars is the nearest to the earth.
D. All the planets are much farther to the earth than the moon.
3.Man can live in a place under the conditions of ___________.
A. the same pressure as we get on earth
B. much too hot surface
C. normal atmosphere as we have on earth
D. Both A and C
4.Scientists think we should take care of our earth because ___________.
A. the only home of man will be the earth for a long time
B. the dream to find another home for man will come true
C. no other planets are to take the place of the earth
D. everything needed is provided by the earth
The life expectancy is the length of time that a person is normally likely to live. As it increases nowadays, the average person lives beyond the age of retirement. As a result, the elderly make up an ever-increasing percentage of society, which makes it more important to make effort to improve the lives of senior citizens.
First of all, one way would be to make sure that the elderly have enough money on which to live. Obviously, when a person stops working, they still require a source of income to cover their basic needs such as food, accommodation and heating. A clear solution to the problem is for the government to make sure that the state pension(养老金) is enough for these needs.
Measures should also be taken to overcome the health problems the elderly face. The government should also provide access to the best health care available, which may necessitate paying for residential homes where the elderly can have round-the-clock nursing, or, at least, providing medication free of charge to all people over a certain age.
If we try to address the problem of social isolation (社交孤立), the lives of old people could be improved. If we organize trips for the elderly to community centers, visits from social workers, their problem of loneliness can be reduced a lot which marks the lives of so many old people living alone and far from their families.
The last helpful suggestion is to change the attitude of the community towards its older members, who are all too often seen as a burden on society. We need to be taught from an early age to respect the views of old people, and appreciate their broader experience of life. This would help society as a whole, and encourage appreciation of the role that old people can still play today.
1.What does underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. time B. retirement
C. life expectancy D. age
2.What factors affected the old people’s life?

C. a, c, e, f D. c, d, e, f
3.According to the last suggestion, the old people ___________.
A. should be respected by all of us
B. may be regarded as our heavy burden
C. must change their attitude to the community
D. have to gather more life experience
People who smoke could lose around one third of their everyday memory, researchers say.
A study by a team at the University of Northumbria has shown that smokers lose more of their memory when compared to non-smokers. And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information restored to almost the same level as non-smokers.
The study involved more than seventy 18-to 25-year-old volunteers and included a tour of the university’s campus. Those who took part were asked to recall(回忆;回想)small details, such as music acts listed to play at the students’ union and tasks completed at various points---known as a real-world memory test.
Smokers performed badly, remembering just 59 percent of tasks. But those who had given up smoking remembered 74 percent and those who had never smoked recalled 81 percent of tasks.
Dr. Tom Heffernan, who leads Northumbria University’s Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group, said the findings would be useful in anti-smoking campaigns. He said, “Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in America, it’s important to understand the effects that smoking has on everyday cognitive function.”
This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an effect on memory. We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits to the body, but this study also shows how stopping smoking can bring a series of benefits to cognitive function. The research will now investigate the effects of second-hand smoking on memory, while Dr. Heffernan will look into third-hand smoking, such as toxins (毒素) left on curtains and furniture.
1.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Effects That Smoking Has on Health
B. New Research on Third-Hand Smoking
C. Smokers Have Much Worse Everyday Memory
D. Anti-Smoking Campaigns Are Active Around the World
2.The underlined words, “kicked the habit”, in the second paragraph can be replaced by “___________”.
A. giving up smoking B. smoked at times
C. smoked regularly D. hated smoking
3.What was the real-world memory test like?
A. It needed young volunteers to complete some tasks.
B. It was about making a tour of the university’s campus.
C. It needed volunteers to act at the students’ union.
D. It involved a tour and a process of recalling some details.
4.We can learn from the passage that ___________.
A. America has twice as many smokers as the UK
B. the research findings will help anti-smoking campaigns
C. the effects of second-hand smoking on memory have been found by the study
D. those who have stopped smoking have as good a memory as non-smokers
There are 115 distinct (独特的) species of pine trees with 35 native to North America. Pines are defined as evergreens with long, needle-like leaves and are only native to the northern hemisphere. Pine trees are an adaptable and tough species that can survive in many conditions where other plants cannot. The average pine tree is 45 to 60 feet tall, but some are nearly twice as high.

Mexican Pine
The Mexican pine can grow to 50 feet tall, with long, slender needles that drape (下垂) off it like a weeping willow (柳树). Often nicknamed the “willow pine”, it is native to Mexico. Its leaves can droop up to 12 inches long.
Sugar Pine
The sugar pine is another of the large pine species, such as the bull pine, but it also has the largest cones of any pine species, at 10 to 20 inches long. It grows from Oregon to California and is often used for construction.
Jack Pine
The jack pine is one of the smallest species of pine with rare leaves. Compared with the pines mentioned above, it doesn’t seem to belong in the family. It is considered a member of the scrub-pine family; it prefers sandy soil.
