Researchers from the University of Newca...

Researchers from the University of Newcastle are leading a worldfirst study which builds on earlier unpublished research that children are most likely to be guided by their father's eating and exercise habits.

The new study “Healthy DadsHealthy Kids”led by Associate Professor Philip Morgan from the University's Faculty of Education and Artsis designed to help fathers promote and demonstrate to their children positive behaviors related to physical activity and healthy eating.

“The earlier findings showed that children are more likely to follow the example set by their father than their mother when it comes to eating and exercise”said Morgan.Morgan saw striking results in a previous trial involving 165 overweight childrenHe found children who lost the most weight had fathers who were engaged in the new eating and exercise plan.

“We might think mothers are the main influence on children's diet and healthbut the reality may be different”said Morgan“The roles of fathers are changingMore families have two parents working and more fathers are involved with food preparation and food shopping than in the past.”

“Fathers influence the food and physical activity habits in the home through their behavioursattitudes and approach to  food and eatingand act as a role model to their children”said  Morgan.

Researchers are inviting fathers who would like to reduce  their weight to join the “Healthy DadsHealthy Kids” programParticipation involves attending eight sessions 讲习班 at the University of Newcastle over six months where the men will receive informationhave weightrelated measurements recorded  and complete questionnaires.

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San FranciscoThere I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theaterWith opening night only a week away, I was still learning my linesI was having trouble with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same timeAs I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San FranciscoCity life had become too much for me

As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and coldI began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbersVery few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.

About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind meI turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gunThe street was emptyAll I saw was a shining streetlightStill, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run fasterNot until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had beenIt had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymoreI ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noiseAlthough I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.

Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck垃圾车 pull up to the sidewalk next to me.When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreamingHow could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes“Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.

It was nearly 3 a.mby the time I got into bedI wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet backI also had got back some enjoyment of city lifeI realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s PoolA couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fieldsThe cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon teaIf you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf – over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”风格of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused 困惑in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks 地标in their directions instead of street names For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the cornerTurn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit marketThe post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarksThere are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within milesInstead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distancesIn Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two milesTurn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles“How far away is the post office?” you ask“Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimesWhat happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impoliteThey usually give an answer, often a wrong oneA tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

1.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually ______.

Adescribe the place carefully

Bshow him a map of the place

Ctell him the names of the streets

Drefer to recognizable buildings and places

2.What is the place where people measure distance in time?

ANew York.  BIowa.

CKansas.   DLos Angeles.

3.People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ______.

Ain order to save time      Bas a test

Cfor fun        Dso as to be polite

4.What can we infer from the text?

AIt’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.

BIt’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.

CPeople have similar understandings of politeness.

DNew Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.
