Still seeking a destination for your wee...

Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere wall away from your college

King’s Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhereThis weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists

You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint – free of charge

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee

the Botanic Garden

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University

The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressiveThe African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss

Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals

The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiastsLook for grass snakes in the lakeA snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun

Byron’s Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge UniversityArriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enoughI’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roomsHe spent a great deal of time walking in the village.

It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s PoolA couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fieldsThe cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon teaIf you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf – over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”风格of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused 困惑in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks 地标in their directions instead of street names For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the cornerTurn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit marketThe post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarksThere are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within milesInstead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distancesIn Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two milesTurn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles“How far away is the post office?” you ask“Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimesWhat happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impoliteThey usually give an answer, often a wrong oneA tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

1.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually ______.

Adescribe the place carefully

Bshow him a map of the place

Ctell him the names of the streets

Drefer to recognizable buildings and places

2.What is the place where people measure distance in time?

ANew York.  BIowa.

CKansas.   DLos Angeles.

3.People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ______.

Ain order to save time      Bas a test

Cfor fun        Dso as to be polite

4.What can we infer from the text?

AIt’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.

BIt’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.

CPeople have similar understandings of politeness.

DNew Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.
