Dear editor, I’m Li Ming of Senior One, Xiangshui High School. I’m writing to tell you about some symptoms of anxiety among us students before exams. It is not surprising that many students feel nervous before they take an important examination. Some of us will feel dizzy while others feel tired and are not energetic any more. Some will suffer from lack of sleep and even lose the appetite. All these symptoms are caused by the pressure of the examination and definitely have a bad effect on our studies. How to get rid of them? My suggestions are as follows. For one thing, we should make a proper plan for reviewing all the lessons, which can save us time. For another thing, we should have a good rest during the examinations, otherwise we should feel exhausted. Last but not least, if you want to have enough sleep, you can take a hot bath or drink some hot milk before you go to the bed. I think these measures are good for your sleep. In addition, we can communicate with our parents, teacher or friends a bit more. They can give us a lot of valuable suggestions. Of course, you can also do some exercises to keep fit. Living in a foreign country is fun, but it isn’t always easy. There are many differences between cultures and although some of these differences are unimportant, they can cause a lot of embarrassments. I spoke to a few foreign friends about how they experienced culture shock in China.

Aubin arrived two months ago from Europe to take part in a language programme in Shanghai. Before he left, he was actually taught the differences between European and Chinese cultures, including everything from table manners to classroom behavior. However, some things have still taken him by surprise. For example, he couldn’t understand why waiters did not want to accept the tips he gave them after meals in restaurants. I had to explain to him that people don’t usually tip in China and that this comes from the Confucian (儒家的,孔子的) idea that one must avoid accepting any undue(不适当的) income.

Another friend, Julia, came to Guangzhou from London to teach at a language school. After a month, she told me that she was really let down(失望的) by her students. I asked her why and she told me that they were so quiet that she was the only person talking in class and it felt like the children were punishing her by making her talk to the walls! I explained to her that the children were simply respectful, but she said that it would be more respectful if they answered her questions.

And it is not only the West and the East that have cultural differences. Even Korea and China, two countries that are very close to each other, have differences too. “I thought Chinese and Korean people were similar in some ways,” said my friend Ji-Hyun in perfect Chinese, “but I was wrong. In ancient times the Chinese used to take their shoes off before entering a house. They don’t do that anymore, but Korean people still do! I keep getting that wrong even though I’ve been here for five years!”

Luckily, whether we take our shoes off or not, or leave unnecessary tips, the world still runs perfectly. In my opinion, cultural differences should simply be seen as a way of making life interesting. Imagine how boring it would be if we all did everything in exactly the same way! Learning to understand and respect differences is, after all, what life is all about.

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways: education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the aging of America has made us a very different society—one in which people have quite a different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.

A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, “I am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age.” No one says “Act your age.” any more. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

1.It can be learned from the text that the aging of the population in America _______.

A. has made people feel younger.

B. has changed people’s social position.

C. has changed people’s understanding of age.

D. has slowed down the country’s social development.

2.The underlined word “one” refers to _______.

A. a society      B. America

C. a place        D. population

3.“Act your age.” Means people should _______.

A. be active when they are old.

B. do the right thing at the right age.

C. show respect to their parents young or old.

D. take more physical exercises suitable to their age.

Su Hua is studying at Cambridge, UK. She has bought a bicycle and is worried about security. Her friend, Kate, found this article and sent it to her.

Introduction

A lot of crime is against bicycles. About 150,000 bicycles are stolen every year and most are never found. You can prevent this happening by following a few careful steps.

Basic Security

Do not leave your bicycle in out-of-the-way places. Always lock your bicycle when you leave. Secure it to lampposts or trees. Take off smaller parts and take them with you, for example lights and saddles(车座).

Locks

Get a good lock. There are many different types in the shop. Buy one that has been tested against attack. Ask for a recommendation from a bike shop.

Marking

Security marking your bike can act as a deterrent(威慑) to a thief. It can also help the police find your bicycle. It should be clearly written and include your postcode and your house or flat number. This will provide a simple way to identify your bicycle.

Registration

There are a number of companies who will mark your bicycle for you. They will then put your registration number and personal details on their computer database. Then if your bicycle is found it will be easy to contact you.
