Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failureThe generation (age) born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores (marks) and performance (show) were played down because “everyone's winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive than ever beforeAs a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”

Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 yearsHer research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to itHere's how they work:

A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic – you're a born artist, point guard, or numbers personThe fixed mind-set believes it's sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shameWhen things get difficult, it's quick to blame (liability), lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possibleBecause the ego (自尊) isn't on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shameWhen faced with a difficulty, it's quick to rethink, change and try againIn fact, it enjoys this experience.

We are all born with growth mind-sets(Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praiseDweck's book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depthBut she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

1.What does the author think about the present generation?

AThey don't do well at school.

BThey are often misunderstood.

CThey are eager to win in sports

DThey are given too much praise.

2.A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ___ .

Adoesn't want to work hard

Bcares a lot about personal safety

Ccannot share his ideas with others

Dcan succeed with the help of teachers

3.What does the growth mind-set believe?

AAdmitting failure is shameful.

BTalent comes with one's birth.

C. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.

DScores should be highly valued.

Many animals recognize their food because they see it. So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.

Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.

Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.

1.We can infer from the text that humans and animals ________.

A. depend on one sense in choosing food

B. are not satisfied with their food

C. choose food in similar ways.

D. eat entirely different food

2.Which of the following eats only one type of food?

A. The white butterfly.                        B. The small bird.

C. The bear                                 D. The fox

3.Certain animals change their choice of food when ______.

A. the season changes

B. The food color changes

C. They move to different places

D. They are attracted by different smells.

4.We can learn from the last paragraph that _____.

A. food is chosen for a good reason.

B. Some people care little about healthy diet

C. some people have few choices of food

I was waiting for a phone call from my agent. He had left a message the night before, telling me that my show was to be canceled. I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited and waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn’t care about my work, and he didn't care about me. I was overcome with that thought. I started to shout at the phone, "Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?"

At that time I didn't realize my wife was looking on. Without showing her surprise, she rushed in, seized the phone, tore off the wires, and shouted at the phone, "Yeah! Who do you think you are? Bad telephone! Bad telephone!" And she swept it into the wastebasket.

I stood watching her, speechless. What on earth?

She stepped to the doorway and shouted at the rest of the house, "Now hear this! All objects in this room—if you do anything to upset my husband, out you go!"

Then she turned to me, kissed me, and said calmly, "Honey, you just have to learn how to take control." With that, she left the room.

After watching a crazy woman rushing in and out, shouting at everything in sight, I noticed that something in my mood had changed. I was laughing. How could I have trouble with that phone? Her antics helped me realize I had been driven crazy by small things. Twenty minutes later my agent did call. I was able to listen to him and talk to him calmly.

1.Why did the author shout at the telephone?

A. He was mad at the telephone.

B. He was angry with his agent.

C. He was anxious about his wife.

D. He was impatient with the secretary.

2.What did the author’s wife do after she heard his shouting?

A. She said nothing.                        B. She shouted at him.

C. She called the agent.                     D. She threw the phone away.

3.What made the author laugh?

A. His own crazy behavior.                  B. His wife’s suggestions.

C. His changeable feeling.                   D. His wife’s sweet kiss.

4.What does the underlined word “ antics” refer to?

A. Smart words    B. Unusual actions.     C. Surprising looks.    D. Anxious feelings
