We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body energetic. If you exercise several times a week, you will stay happy and healthy.

Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US, many people don't have enough exercise because it is hard for them. People have to work from morning to late afternoon, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. It is impossible for them to get much exercise in this way.

Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, most of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is not good in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours and needs too much attention. It makes a person very tired. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don't want to take exercise after work.

Today, many people in the West are overweight which causes health problems for them. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So many people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don't see a difference right away, they will lose confidence and stop exercising.

It is difficult to say exactly how the music we call “rock” or “rock and roll” began. Its roots (根源) go back to many different countries and many different kinds of music and many musicians.

Rock music developed mainly from the interaction (相互影响)of black African and white European music. The Europeans and the African slaves (奴隶)who came to America during the seventeenth century each had their own different kinds of music. Black Africans used heavy drumbeats, a rough singing voice, and the calling of a melody (旋律)and answer of a chorus. The white Europeans, mostly English and Scots, used a stronger melody, a less heavy beat, and instruments such as guitars, horns, and fiddles. The history of rock and roll is the history of how rock changed from these two traditions.

From the seventeenth to the twentieth century, musicians in the southern United States developed two new forms of music: the blues, usually played by blacks, and country music, played by whites. Black musicians sang the blues with a guitar. This music was similar to work songs: stories of troubles and pain, with lines that were repeated several times. The word “rock and roll” probably came from the black churches in the South, where people sang and danced to the strong rhythms, which they called “rocking and reeling”. At the same time, whites were playing country music, which was mostly traditional dancing music and slow songs that told sad stories. The singers played with string instruments such as fiddles and guitars.

During this time blues and country musicians had some influence on each other, but the influence grew stronger after phonograph records (留声机唱片)became popular in the late nineteenth century. The birth of the electric guitar changed country and blue music in the 1940s. The sound of the electric guitar would become the sound of rock and roll. No one thinks of early rock and roll without thinking of Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock and Roll”. Rock music continues to develop and change, but the heart and soul of rock is the same heart and soul that Elvis expressed.

(an extract from a detective story)

"Sit down, " Henderson said, sitting down in an armchair himself and looking at Logan. "What are you here for?"

"I understand you had a party last night" said Logan, a police officer.

"Yes," said Henderson, "Oh! I hope the neighbours haven’t been complaining about the noise again. "

"Not that I know of." said Logan. "But a young girl, Fran, who came to the patty hasn't been home yet"

"Fran" said Henderson. "Yes, she was here. She left early, as I remember-about one o'clock. I happened to notice what the time was when she came to say goodbye. But nobody else left until about four in the morning."

Henderson looked quite relaxed.

"Did you know Clare?" asked Logan suddenly.

"Oh, God!" Henderson sat forward. "You don't think ... the same thing has happened to Fran?"

"We're keeping an open mind," said Logan, watching him carefully, "but we're giving it our full attention."

Well, yes. I can understand that. " replied Henderson, getting comfortable in the armchair again.

"So," repeated Logan, "did you know Clare?"

"Well, sure. I knew who she was. But we never had anything to do with each other." Said Henderson, giving Logan a big smile.

"Who else was at your party?" asked Logan.

"People from the university," said Henderson. "Students, teachers."

"David?" asked Grant, Logan's partner.

"Yes, David was here for a time." Henderson smiled again. "But he's not really a party animal. He probably left early."

"What do you mean, probably?" asked Grant.

Henderson looked at Grant. Grant was sixty with thick black hair and a large moustache. His clothes, as always, looked rather old: a blue jacket and grey trousers. He did not look much of a party animal either.

"Well, I don't check when my guests arrive and leave," said Henderson. "And some people just leave when they want to go home. They don't come and say goodbye. Anyway, sometimes I can be difficult to find." Again he looked at Logan, raised his eyebrows and gave her a big smile. "I sometimes end up in the bedroom"

1.How many characters are mentioned in the story?

A. Five. B. Six. C. Seven. D. Eight

2.Why did Logan and Grant go to Henderson's house?

A. Because the girl Fran who attended the party disappeared.

B. Because they went to the party held in, Henderson's house.

C. Because Henderson's neighbours called them for the noise.

D. Because they wanted to know why Henderson held the party.

3.What can be inferred (推断) from Grant's question "What do you mean, probably?"?

A. Grant helped Logan to ask this question.

B. Grant didn't understand Henderson's words.

C. Grant himself wasn't a party animal like David.

D. Grant wanted to know the exact time of David's leaving.
