Volunteering means spending some of your free time helping others. You may volunteer to help other people, such as the families who lost their homes after a natural disaster. And you can also volunteer to protect animals, the environment, or any other things that you care about.
●Help yourself by helping others.
Volunteering helps others, but it can also help you. If you’re upset about something, volunteering can be a great way to cope (应付) with your feelings. Lots of people find that they really enjoy volunteering. Volunteer experiences often put you in a different environment that you wouldn’t have met in your life.
●Get started
School is a good place to start if you’re looking for volunteer ideas. Ask a teacher for ideas. Some places want volunteers who are 12 or even older, depending on the job. Often kids start volunteering by working alongside their parents.
●Do things with parents or family members.
Volunteering is a great way to have fun with your family. Talk to your parents, brothers, or sisters and see what they might be interested in doing. Find something you all agree on.
●Invent your own opportunity
Kids can also come up with their own ways to raise money or provide needed services. Here are some ideas: 1. Make and sell products and give the money to the charity. 2. Collect or earn money for charities. 3. Start your own charity group.
Some schools now need kids to help others. Why? Because grown-ups hope kids will become caring people who see the value of giving of their time, talents, and things (like money, toys, or clothes). Volunteering gives kids a taste of responsibility because people are depending on them for something important.
Volunteering can also help kids learn important things about themselves-like what kinds of things they’re best at and enjoy the most. A volunteer job can even help some kids decide what they want to do when they grow up. So what are you waiting for? Make a plan to start volunteering today!

Last Friday, I agreed to meet some friends at 6:00 p.m. in a coffee shop. The weather was sunny, so I decided to walk there. I arrived ten minutes early. I ordered a cup of coffee and sat watching people. There were some boys playing football on the street, and a small boy was running after the ball as it rolled (滚) across the road.
Suddenly, there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked (刹车) hard. But it was too late. The small boy was lying on the street without moving. To everyone’s surprise, the car didn’t stop. It drove away quickly.
People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy’s head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner telephoned the police. Soon an ambulance (救护车) arrived and took the boy to the hospital.
At 6:30 p.m., the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn’t leave the police station until 8:00 p.m. After that I went home because I didn’t feel like talking to anyone.
The next day, the boy’s parents called me to say thanks. They also told me their boy was fine and the driver was in the police station now.
