Many people head to the Takhini Hot Springs in Yukon, Canada to take part in the International Hair Freezing Contest ( 国际头发冰冻比赛) in winter. The event usually runs for the whole month of February which is traditionally the coldest time of the year in Yukon. It is below 4 oF(—20℃). The purpose of the contest is to create the most creative frozen hairstyle possible.
After checking in, you are led to the natural hot springs, which has a temperature of 104 oF(40℃). Thanks to the cold air, only putting the head into the water is enough to freeze hair.
You can also sit in the hot springs and allow the steam to gradually get on your head while the cold air freezes your hair. After the hair is frozen and molded ( 成 型 ) (when possible), you take pictures. The hot springs officials collect all the pictures during the contest and in mid to late March the top three pictures are chosen.
People must agree to give all rights of their pictures to the hot springs officials. The contest also offers some great prizes.
1st place: $750 and a free 30—time soak (浸泡) membership at the hot springs. 2nd place: $200 and a free 12—time soak pass.
3rd place: $100 and a free 3—day pass.
The contest started in 2011. Now it has become hugely popular and draws lots of people from all over the world.

Radboud University in Dutch dug a hole in the ground, which is called “purification grave (净化坟墓)”.
It is an invitation to think about what is really important in life. First dug in 2009, the grave was part of a two—year project. However, it made a comeback this year. Signing up (报名) to lie in the several—foot—deep hole for 30 minutes to three hours, every student at the university as well as those at the neighboring university may have a try. To make them pay full attention to things around and themselves, they mustn’t take phones or books with them in the grave. “We dug another grave in the garden,” said Radboud University. “You can decide for yourself how long you want to do this. Telephones and books in the grave are prohibited. It is a place for meditation (冥想). Under you the earth;above you the sky. See what goes through your mind. If you don’t want to lie in the grave, you can also sit near it.”
39 people took part in the 2009 project, but ever since the grave was dug in June, 2019, tens of people have already tried it. Every week, a few people use the grave.

Recently, I was invited to watch my students’ cross—country meet (越野赛). At first, I didn’t know if I should go because I was not a sports fan of any kind and my job had nothing to do with sports. Although many people might say they wouldn’t exactly consider the cross—country a sport, I would disagree. The cross—country beginners have to work out and exercise just like you do for any other sports.
I never knew how much fun I would have watching a group of my students run for fun. Whether they ran fast or slow, they still tried their best to complete the game. They kept going no matter how tired they were.
It was wonderful to see how encouraging the audience ( 观 众 ) was to runners everywhere. It wasn’ t just their runners that they would cheer for. It was all runners, fast or slow. When the kids heard the audience cheering them on, or even just clapping (鼓掌) to encourage them, they would run faster and faster in search of the finish line; it was just so cool to watch.
I am proud of each one of my students who ran yesterday. They did a wonderful job. I surely want to supports cross—country meet later. I’m not talking about coaching it or anything like that, but just to support them by going to their meets.
