My 11-year-old daughter has been offered an academic scholarship (奖学金) to a private school. It's only a small discount (折扣), but the scholarship means she is accepted by the school which my husband and I need to pay $ 20,000 a year for. Should we pay the private school cost, or choose free education instead?

It was really a hard decision for us to make. For me, I always wanted my children to go to a private school, like I did. Not because my family is rich, but because I believe that the best education is private. It took years for me to make peace with the fact that my two children attended our local public primary school. “They'll go to a private high school.” I told myself.

But the fact is that my eldest is now in her last year of primary school, and my husband and I will find our way to afford the private school. If so, I could increase my work hours. My law degree was supposed to be my ticket to a good job and a good pay, but that was just our wishes, not the fact.

During many sleepless nights, I felt troubled by the decision. Although I want the best for my daughter, I have my own dreams too. I can't give up everything for my baby girl. I explain that I want to be a positive (积极的) role model for my daughter, and an unhappy parent is a terrible strain on a family. I point out that even the best private school won’t protect my children from disappointment or hard work. And finally, it's decided.

Because I understand it's my family that shaped me instead of my great private school education. I can no longer remember the maths problems and what Shakespeare said which I once knew so perfectly. The lessons from my family, however, have turned out to be impossible to forget.

Everyone has an important role in society. In this time of public crisis(危机), it’s important that each of us sticks to our roles and plays them well. What can common people do in this crisis? How are the Chinese people taking on their special responsibilities? Here are some of the examples.

The novel coronavirus(新冠病毒)made this year’s Spring Festival very different for most of us. Many places in China began a first-level emergency (突发事件) response to the virus at the end of January, calling for people to stay at home. Following these rules, most people gave up family dinners during the Spring Festival and canceled any festival celebrations.

“It’s the quietest Chinese New Year I’ve ever had,” Xin Jingrong, a 14-year-old student from Nanning, Guangxi. It was the first time that Xin’s grandmother had to put off her trip to Nanning and stay alone in her hometown.

The control all over China not only separates many families, but also        ▲      . Many shops are closed, delivery services are slow, and wearing masks in public has become a must. But people are showing their understanding and cooperation (合作).

Tong Zexi, a 15-year-old student from Harbin, has not gone out in more than 20 days. “I know I need to protect myself and cause no trouble. In this key time, when one gets sick, many others could be influenced.”

More than simply following the rules, some people have done amazing things to help fight the outbreak. On Feb 3, Zhao Junyan, a Junior 2 student from Shanghai, brought 15,000 masks from Indonesia back to China, People’s Daily reported. Zhao, while traveling in Jakarta, collected the masks with his uncle, who works in the city. The 15-year-old gave away all of the masks to Cangnan, Zhejiang, his hometown. “When a country is in trouble, everyone is responsible to help,” Zhao said to the reporter. “What I have done is what an normal Chinese person can possibly do.”

As a popular speech says nowadays, “We are all fighters!” Everyone has his or her role to play in this fight. And it’s believed that we can soon enjoy the warm sunshine and beautiful spring freely outside!

Since the NCP (新冠肺炎) outbreak began in December, Japan has given away a lot of medical supplies (物资) to China. On the boxes of these supplies, poems are often written. Taken from ancient Chinese and Japanese poems, these powerful and inspiring lines show heartfelt wishes for Chinese people. And they let people know that ancient stars still shine in modern times. Let’s take a look at some of them.

山川异域,风月同天。

Lands apart, sky shared.

This line comes from a Buddhist hymn (佛诗) by the Japanese Prince Nagaya (长屋亲王). This hymn reminds us of the cultural exchanges between both countries in history. At that time, the prince wrote the hymn as an invitation for Chinese Buddhist monks(僧侣) to visit Japan. Inspired by the hymn, Jianzhen, a well-known monk of the Tang Dynasty (618907), started his travel to Japan soon after.

岂曰无衣?与子同裳。

Fear not the want of armor(盔甲), for mine is also yours to wear.

This line is from a battle song of the Qin state, Wuyi (《无衣》), in the Book of Songs (《诗经》). The song refers to (指的是) soldiers sharing their armor, encouraging each other to win the war. The Chinese phrase “同裳” has the same meaning as “同袍” and “袍泽” which also come from this song. They all mean those who have fought together in armies.

青山一道同云雨,明月何曾是两乡。

Though separated by a mountain, we’ll share the same clouds and rain/The bright moon belongs not to a single town.

This sentence is from Tang poet Wang Changling’s Seeing Off Imperial Censor Chai (《送柴侍御》). This poem was written after the poet was demoted (贬官) and sent to a faraway place. He wanted to show that even though he had to separate with his friend, their friendship would continue.

A.Prince Nagaya B.Jianzhen C.Wang Changling D.a Chinese monk

2.In the poems, people in different places can share the same things EXCEPT ________.

A.clothes B.the sky C.clouds and rain D.the bright moon

3.The theme of the poems written on the boxes is ________.

4.We can know from the passage that ________.

A.all the sentences are taken from Chinese poems B.actions are always better than words

It happens to all of us. It is the end of the term and your teacher gives you your report card. You look at it and your heart stops because you realize that your parents are going to be very angry. This is the classic case of a bad report card! There is nothing you can do to change the past. So, what can you do now?

Grades are how most schools evaluate(评价)students and they are pretty important. The problem is that we do not always get good grades we (or our parents) want. After a bad report card, it is important to figure out what to do next.

The first thing to do is to talk to your teacher. Find out how your grades are calculated(计算). Is the problem a bad test, lack of participation(参与)in class, or a failure to complete homework? Next, if the problem is something you can solve on your own (such as not doing your homework), make a promise to change your behavior! Thirdly, if you have been studying hard and still get a bad grade, you probably need some extra help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and explain your situation. He or she will tell you where you can receive the extra help you need. Lastly, make a detailed plan of how you will improve your grades. Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. That’s a good way to make your parents less angry.

While all parents want their children to get good grades, most understand that every report card is not perfect. The important thing is that you show your parents you have a plan to improve your grades for next time. Always remember, many of the world’s most successful people failed many times before they became successful. They learned from their failures, and you should, too!

1.The problem with the grades is that ________.

A.most schools evaluate students by using grades B.it’s important to get good grades

A.crazy B.serious C.sad D.angry

3.The text above is written to ________.

A.encourage students to get good grades B.make parents less angry

C.share ways to deal with bad report cards D.find excuses for bad grades

4.The passage is probably from________.
