    A new smart city will soon be built in the middle of the Arizona Desert, thanks to Bill Gates’ Smart City Project.

What is a smart city?

A smart city is a city area and people there can use the latest technology to collect information and manage resources. People live a quality life. The environment there is clean and sustainable (可持续的).

Gates bought 25,000 acres (英亩) of land near Phoenix two years ago. He planned to build a smart city with the latest technology, high-speed Internet, and large data centers. The city is named Belmont. It will become one of Arizona’s largest cities.

About 3,800 acres will be used for office and business space. About 470 acres will be used for public schools. Around 80,000 flats will be built.

The project says that about 182,000 people will live in Belmont in the future.

The project also introduces how cities of the future are run, so it is great.

Most people think it is the hardest project. Also, at present no one knows when it will begin, or how much they will spend. Gates hasn’t revealed (透露) any detail yet. But he has already spent more than $ 80 million on the project.

    A young lady was driving a family car home with her father when they were caught in a heavy storm. The young lady was a little afraid and asked her father. "What should I do, stop or keep driving? "

    Could you live without a TV for one year? What would you do with all that spare time? Philippa Carling wanted to see if it was possible and persuaded(说服)her family to give theirs up for one whole year.

"I live with my husband and our two children," explains Philippa, "and I realized just how much time we spent sitting in front of the TV. The children turned it on first thing in the morning and again when they got back from school. My husband and I were no better. We'd spend the evening together talking about very little but what programme was on at that time. Then the family decided, after lots of arguments (争论), that we would try to do without a for one year. We nag on the Internet and everyone was allowed to watch some of the recorded programmes-if they had a good reason for doing so." And so, on 24th July last year, the Carling family sold their TV.

Eleven months have now gone by and Philippa believes the experiment (实验) has own a great success. As she explains, "We were all surprised at how easy it was. The immediate result was we all started to read a lot more, including the children. We spend time together after dinner playing board games around the table and the children finish their homework a lot quicker than before. We talk about what will happen when the year comes to an end and the children have always said they want the TV back. But they've also agreed that life has been good without it."

So will the TV return when the year comes to an end next month? "We're not sure," says Philippa. "We might decide to buy a new one or we might not. The important thing is we've all learnt that life can carry on without one. It can even be fun!"
