One day, Miss Mary asked the class to think of a story with a moral (寓意).
Little Suzy put up her hand. “My dad owns a farm. Every Sunday, we put chicken eggs in our truck and drive into town to sell them at the market. Well, one Sunday we hit a big bump (凸块) and all the eggs flew out of our basket and onto the road.”
When the teacher asked for the moral of the story, Suzy replied, “________.”
Little Lucy went next. “My dad owns a farm, too. Every weekend, we take our chicken eggs and put them in our incubator (孵化器). But last weekend, only eight of our 12 eggs hatched (孵出小鸡).”
Again, the teacher asked for the moral. Lucy answered, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”
Next up was little Johnny. “My uncle Ted was drunk one day and he told me a story. He fought in a war many years ago and his plane was shot down over an enemy area. He jumped out of the plane with only a bottle of whiskey, a machine gun and a sword (剑).
On the way down, he drank the bottle of whiskey. Then, he landed right in the middle of 100 enemy soldiers. He shot 70 of them with his machine gun, but then he ran out of bullets (子弹)! So he pulled out his sword and killed 20 more. Then the sword broke, so he killed the last ten with his bare hands.”
The teacher and other students looked shocked (震惊). Miss Mary asked what the moral of this story was.
“Well,” Johnny replied, don’t trust uncle Ted when he’s drunk.”
