    El Nino(厄尔尼诺)causes floods,droughts(干旱)and other bad weather conditions around the world.It doesn't happen every year, but this year is an El Nino year.And that is bad news.

As fish don't like warm water, they swim to other places. Birds that live on them also move away. El Nino is the name of a climate event that happens in the Pacific Ocean. In summer, tropical(热带的)rain falls on Indonesia. But for some years, the Pacific Ocean moves its rainfall east. This warms the ocean as it travels, before finally reaching the shores(海岸)of North and South America.

Cold water is pushed out of the way by the warm water. The warmer temperatures cause floods in southern US and South America. And because the warm rain clouds move east,droughts happen in South Asia, Australia and even Africa.

El Nino usually lasts 6 to 18 months. They don't happen every year though, usually between two to seven years.

Every El Nino is different. The strongest El Nino happened in 1982. In the West Pacific, it caused droughts,dust storms and bush fires in Australia,Africa and Indonesia. In the East Pacific, Peru was hit with 11 feet(about 3 m) of rainfall in areas where 6 inches(about 15 cm) was normal. It is the heaviest rainfall ever recorded. That year's El Nino caused $10 billion in damages around the world. And it caused 1,300-2,000 deaths.
