Jordan Romero, a 13-year-old American boy became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma on Saturday.

The eighth grader with long curly hair from California said that he first came up with the idea to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents(大洲) four years ago.

The former record for climbers to climb Mount Qomolangma had been held by Temba Tsheri ofNapal(尼泊尔) who reached the peak at the age of 16.

Jordan’s climbing team reached the top hours earlier than expected. After they reached, they all hugged each other, saying, “I love you. I can’t believe we’re finally here.” and started crying.

Jordan, from Big Bear, California, was climbing Qomolangma with his father, his father’s friend and three guides. He left for the peak from the base camp on the Chinese side.

Unlike neighboring Nepal, the other way to Qomolangma, China has no age limit for climbers.

On the top, Jordan left behind his lucky rabbit’s foot and planted some seeds for good luck on his journey. Then he took the satellite phone and called his mom on the top of the world’s highest mountain, 29,035 feet8,850 metersabove sea level.

Jordan said he hoped to climb the final top of the mountain in Antarctic(南极洲)by December orJanuary. With this dream nearly finished, he already has his eyes on the next goal, that is, he plans to climb the highest peaks in all 50 US states.

When my brother and I were growing up, we mowed(割草)yards during the summer to make pocket money. Dad was our salesman. He traded our service to neighbors at a price they could not refuse. My brother and I got $10 per yard. I later found out our friends had asked $20 or more for the same amount of work.

One afternoon we were cutting our neighbor's yard, the grass was knee-high. What made matters worse was that we had an old lawn mower that kept shutting off as we worked through her lawn. This particular afternoon, I was finishing up and was tired and sweaty. I was just about to leave when I saw Dad pointing to one lone piece. Thinking about the poor money I was getting paid for cutting grass so high that it almost broke the mower, I ignored him and kept walking. Dad called me out, “You missed a piece”.

I frowned(皱眉), hoping he would let me slide and go home. He kept pointing. So angry, I went back to cut that piece of grass. I said to myself, “That one piece isn't hurting anyone. Why won't he just let it go?”

But when I became an adult, I understood his message: When you are running a business, the work you do says a great deal about you. If you want to be seen as a businessman with honesty, you must produce a quality product. That single piece of grass meant the job was not done. Other neighbors took notice of the good work we did and we soon got more business.

The lesson my dad taught me stayed with me: If you say you are going to perform a job at certain time, keep your word. Give your customers the kind of service you would like to receive. It shows how sincere you are and how much pride you take in your work.

1.Why did Dad ask much less for mowing the yards?

A.Because he was not a good businessman. B.Because he didn’t care about money too much.

C.Because he thought his children s service was bad. D.Because the owner of the yard was too poor.

2.When Dad asked the writer to go back, the writer felt_____________.

A.excited B.surprised C.angry D.pleased

3.The underlined word “sincere”in the last paragraph can probably be replaced by.

A.clever B.honest C.happy D.able

4.The best title for the passage may be__________.

A.The Memory of My Childhood B.The Yard of Our Neighbor

C.The Lesson from My Dad D.The Grass Cutting Days

April Fool's Day is supposed to be a day to play jokes on others in the hope of getting a good laugh and making one feel like a fool.

April Fool's Day started in the sixteenth century in Europe. Before that time, New Year's Day was celebrated on April 1st. Then a new calendar called the Gregorian calendar was introduced. January 1st became the first day of the year, but many people didn't know about it. So those who continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1st were laughed at. They were called fools.

Nowadays we play jokes on people on April 1st. For example, someone might put salt in the sugar bottle so another person could put it in his coffee "by accident". Or someone might change the time on another person's alarm clock so that that person would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than planned. Or maybe a person would tell a lie to make someone else shocked.

After we play the trick, we say "April Fools". Then the poor person realizes he was fooled. It is generally done in the spirit of fun and doesn't cause any real harm(伤害) to anyone.

1.April Fool's Day started in the sixteenth century in Africa.

2.Before the sixteenth century, New Year's Day was celebrated on April 1st

3.We can’t play jokes on people on April Fool's Day

4.Sometimes people tell a lie to shock someone on New Year's Day.

5.We usually say "April Fools" after we play jokes on people on April 1st.
