Do you want 5.(know) more about the books and the writer? You can find the information on the Internet.

1.opens 2.refused 3.didn’t give 4.have translated 5.to know 【解析】 本文主要讲《哈利波特》这本读物曾遭遇出版挫折,但最终大获成功。 1. 根据when the first Harry Potter book came out,came out出版,came为come的过去式,可知本句时态为一般过去时,所以用refuse的过去式refused,故答案为refused。 3. 由so far到目前为止,可知本句时态为现在完成时have done,主语people人们,所以助动词用have,故答案为have translated。 5.句意:你想知道更多关于书和作家的事吗? 动词短语want to know“想知道”,所以用know的动词不定式形式to know,故答案为to know。

The size and shape of your ears show your character (性格)more than any other parts of the face. Other parts of the face change shape as we get older, but ears do not change their shape. They only change in size.

Reading people’s character from their ears is an old science. In very old times people thought that a person with big ears had a good and generous character. They thought that a person with pale (nearly white), small ears was dangerous. They also thought that the shape of the ear showed whether(是否)a person was musical or not. Today, too, many people believe that the size and the shape of the ear help you know if a person is musical.

Ears are all different, and each characteristic(特性)has a meaning. Next time when you look at a person, see if his ears are large or small. Look at the lobes ( the lowest part of the ear). Are they attached (连着) to the face? Ears that are always red mean a person may easily get angry, or he/she just has high blood pressure (高血压). Ears that are always cold and pale mean a person has a nervous character. And a big inside hole of the ear means a person is musical.

1.In the old times people might ask for help from a person with____________.

A.red ears B.big ears C.small ears D.pale ears

2.The passage is mainly about ___________.

A.the size of our ears B.musical ears

C.ears which related to (...有关) characters D.our faces and ears

3.We can guess Beethoven (贝多芬)may have __________________.

A.pale ears B.white ears

C.small ears D.ears with a big inside hole

4.If you are often late for school, you may find the ears of your teacher _________.

A.get bigger B.get smaller C.get colder D.get redder

We are always using body language in our daily life. When we have a conversation with someone, we may be using more body language than words. However, the same body language may mean different things in different countries. That’s why people sometimes do not understand each other correctly. Pointing to one part of the body can mean differently in different cultures. For example, in the USA people point to their heads when they think someone is clever. However, in Europe it means ‘He or she is stupid or something is wrong with his or her head’. In our Chinese culture, nodding(点头) our head up and down means ‘yes’ and shaking our head from side to side means ‘no’. However, in parts of India, Greece and Turkey, it means just the opposite. In England or the USA, when you raise your hand and make a circle with the thumb(拇指)and the second finger, it means ‘You’re all right or Everything is OK. However, if we do this in France or Belgium, it means ‘You’re worth zero’. In Greece or Turkey, we should not make this gesture(手势). Or we are thought to be very rude.

The meaning of gestures can also change over time. In the 1960s, the V sign meant ‘peace’. However, during World War II, it meant ‘victory’. In Greece, it is a very insulting(污辱性)sign.

Though the meaning of body language is different, there are some expressions having the same meaning throughout the world, such as smiling and crying.

1.In England, if people point to their heads it means they think someone is ________.

A.clever B.stupid C.headache D.angry

2.In India, if one nods his head up and down, it means he ______.

A.doesn’t agree B.agree C.is happy D.is sad

3.In France, if you raise your hand and make a circle with the thumb and the second finger, it means _________.

A.you are clever B.everything is OK

C.it is true D.you are worth nothing
