It is difficult for parents of nearly every family to teach their children to be responsible(有责任的) for housework, but with one of the following suggestions, you really can get your children to help at home.

If you give your children the impression(印象) that they can never do anything right, then they will treat themselves as unable persons. Unless children believe they can succeed, they will never become totally independent(独立).

My daughter Mary's fifth-grade teacher made every child in her class feel good When students received less than a perfect test score, she would point out what they had mastered and said they could learn what they had missed.

You can use the same way when you evaluate(评价) your child's work at home. Do not always scold but give lots of praise to your children instead. Talk about what he has done right, not about what he hasn't done. If your child completes a difficult task, promise him a Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad.

Having a husband means an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new study. For men, getting married saves an hour of housework a week. "It's a well-known pattern(模式)," said lead researcher Frank Stafford at University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. "Men usually work more outside the home, while women take on more of the housework."

He points out that differences among households(家庭) exist. But in general, marriage means more housework for women and less for men. "And the situation gets worse for women when they have children," Stafford said.

Overall, times are changing in the American home. In 1976, women busied themselves with 26 weekly hours of housework, compared with 17 hours in 2005. Men are taking on more housework, more than doubling their housework hours from 6 in 1976 to 13 in 2005.

Single women in their 20s and 30s did the least housework, about 12 weekly hours, while married women in their 60s and 70s did the most-about 21 hours a week.

Men showed a somewhat different pattern, with older men picking up the broom(扫帚) more often than younger men. Single men worked the hardest around the house, more than that of all other age groups of married men.

Having children increases housework even further. With more than three children, for example, wives took on more of the extra work, clocking about 28 hours a week compared with husbands'10 hours.

3.What kind of man is doing most housework according to the text?

A.An unmarried man. B.An older married man.

C.A younger married man. D.A married man with children.

4.What can we conclude from Stafford's research?

A.Marriage gives men less freedom. B.Marriage has effects on job choices.

C.Housework sharing changes over time. D.Having children means doubled housework.

All big cities are quite similar. Living in a modern Asian city is not very different from living in an American city. But it is different from living on farms however.

In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each family lives on its own fields and often can't see any neighbor. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning. American farmers stay on their land all the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on horses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas there are some small schools serving a few families and the children walk to school.

Of course, life keeps changing for everyone including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios and TV sets. And of course, there are modern machines for faming now. All these have greatly changed farmers’ life.

Before, farming in America was often a lonely way of living for a long time. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new ways, and thought of their own ideas instead of following old ways.
