My trip to Sichuan
Winter is cold and it can be difficult for animals to find food during winter. They get through winter in many ways.
Would you like to go to a warm place for the winter? That’s what migratory (迁徙的) animals do. When the weather starts to get cold, migratory animals like some birds and butterflies fly to a warmer place, and then they come back in spring.
Another good way to get through winter is to sleep through it. Many animals hide and sleep during the winter. Their body temperature drops and hearts beat more slowly. This helps them to save their energy. They do not eat. They live off their fat. They wake up when the weather gets warmer. We call this hibernation (冬眠). Snakes, frogs and bears hibernate in winter.
Many animals stay active in winter and adapt to (适应) the cold weather. Some animals save food in summer and autumn and eat it in winter. This is what squirrels do. Other animals make changes in their bodies or behavior (行为). To keep warm, some animals grow thicker coats in winter. Some animals eat different kinds of food as the seasons change. The red fox eats fruit and insects in the other three seasons, but eats small rodents (啮齿类动物) in winter. Other animals change colour. The arctic (北极的) fox is brown in summer. Its coat turns white in winter.
How do you live through the winter? Do you wear a thick coat? Do you stay inside? Or do you live in a warm place?

Twin (双胞胎的) sisters Lin Ting and Mao Yue from Zhejiang become “stars” on the Internet because they make interesting shouzhang. These two 15-year-old girls are from Grade 8, Wenhui Middle School in Hangzhou. They record things about food, travel, pets, school life and other interesting things in their lives in their shouzhang.
The twins started to make their shouzhang about three years ago. “Nothing will be greater than to look back on these beautiful memories when we get old,” Lin said.
They write funny stories about their two pet dogs Dabao and Gege in their shouzhang. When Lin has too much homework to do, she writes about how she feels. “It makes me feel better,” Lin said. They also write about their favourite food and stars. Mao collected pictures of ice cream, coffee and her hero Zhang Yixing, and stuck them in their shouzhang. Chantek was a special orangutan (红毛大猩猩). In 1979, when Chantek was 9 months old, a scientist (科学家) called Lyn Miles took him to the University of Tennessee (田纳西大学) in the USA. She wanted to teach Chantek like teaching a human child. She and some other scientists taught him sign language (手语). Chantek learned at least 150 words in American sign language. They also taught him other human skills like using a bathroom and cleaning his room.
Chantek stayed at the university for 8 years. He sometimes even walked to classes with students. But in 1986, Chantek ran away from his place and scared a student. The student cried in fear and said that Chantek wanted to hurt her. So people had to send him to an animal center. He spent 11 years there, living in a cage and becoming fat and unhappy.
In 1997, Chantek moved into Zoo Atlanta. There, he could finally go outside and jump from tree to tree. The zoo said Chantek often used sign language to “talk” with his caretakers (看护员). But he was too shy to do it with visitors.
Lyn Miles often visited Chantek in the zoo. She said that Chantek still saw himself as half human, and he called the other orangutans in the zoo “orange dogs”.
