任务型阅读

We live in a world full of many different kinds of people. We want to get along well with others. We also want to be liked by others. The following ways will make others like you.

Do This and You'll Be Welcome Anywhere

Become really interested in other people. A show of interest must be true. It must bring good results to the person showing the interest, but also to the person receiving the attention. It is a two-way street—you two get an advantage.

A Simple Way to Make a Good First Impression(印象)

Smile as often as possible. Your smile is a sign of kindness. When someone feels stressed from his or her teachers or parents, your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds; your smile can help him or her realize that all is hopeful--that there is still joy in the world.

If You Don't Do This, You Are Getting into Trouble

Remember a person’s name. A person's name is the sweetest and the most important sound in any language. We should realize the magic in a name. The name makes the person different from others; it makes him or her special among all others. If you remember a person's name, the relationship between both of you will become much closer.

An Easy Way to Become a Good Talker

Be a careful listener first. Ask questions that other persons will like to answer. Encourage them to talk about themselves and their achievements. What you need to do is just to listen, because people are much more interested in themselves.

If I were to ask you to close your eyes and I gave you a piece of apple to eatwould you be able to tell me what it is just by tasting itOf courseyou could. Your tongue(舌头)helps you know what different foods taste like. Do you know that foods would taste different if you did not have a nose

What You Need

a friend to help

small pieces of any food like carrotorangebanana-whatever you have

small pieces of applesrawuncookedpotato andif you are braveonion(洋葱)

What You Do

There are actually three different experiments. You and your friend should take turns trying them on each other.

Experiment1:

Have your friend close her eyes and open her mouth. Give her a piece of the food and ask her to taste it. Then, ask her what she thinks it is. She will probably guess correctly.

Experiment2:

While your friend has her eyes closed, give her a piece of raw potato. At the same time, hold a piece of apple right under her nose. Ask her to eat the potato and tell you what she thinks it is. She will say it is a piece of apple! You can even do it the other way around, and she will think she is eating a potato, or, perhaps, she won't be able to name what she is eating.

Experiment 3:(for the brave)

Take a piece of raw onion. You don't have to close your eyes this time. Press your nose closed with yourother hand so that no smells can get into your nose. Now eat a small piece of the onion. Surprise! As long as you hold your nose, you will not be able to taste the onion.

The Science Secret

You already know the science secret. Your nose and your tongue work together to make food taste the way it does. Your tongue, however, can taste only certain flavors like salty, bitter, sour, and sweet. All of the other"tastes"are actually "smells", and you need your nose to taste them.

Oh, you might use this science secret the next time you are forced to eat something you don't like the taste of. If you hold your nose while you eat it, you won't"taste"it at all.

1.According to this article, what could a person know about food?

A. People hold their noses to eat onions.

B. If you close your eyes, food will taste better.

C. People need a sense of smell to taste some food.

D. If you can smell potatoes, you will taste apples.

2.What is the most probable reason Experiment 3 is called"for the brave"?

A. You have to eat a raw onion.

B. You keep your eyes open.

C. You have to hold your nose.

D. You do the experiment alone.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Knowledge comes from personal experience.

B. Team work helps us to find out science secrets.

C. We should have courage while doing experiments.

D. We can't draw a conclusion simply from the feeling.

4.What's the passage mainly about?

A. Why different foods can smell the same.

B. How smell influences the way food tastes.

C. Why some things smell better than others.

D. How smell changes the way we see things.

    Day 3: Tuesday December 2

We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We'd be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica(南极洲) is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can't fly at all.

We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we'd be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots(飞行员) wait for good weather.

It turned clear at 9: 30 and we took off at 10: 30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn' t be able to fly the whole day.

Day 4: Wednesday December 3

After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.

We're staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It's about -2°C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts.

Day5: Thursday December 4

I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I'm told it's a bit colder today, about -5°C, but it's not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.

Day 7: Saturday December 6

Not a cloud in the sky and it's warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).

The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery(风景) changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I'd step outside in the morning and think, "I'm sure that big mountain of ice wasn't there yesterday." It's because the sea ice is always moving--slowly thankfully.

1.What could stop Lizzie from leaving Stanley for Rothera?

A.Strong winds. B.Thick clouds. C.Mountains of ice. D.Low temperatures.

2.How did Lizzie feel during her stay in the Antarctic?

A.Afraid. B.Nervous. C.Amazed D.Bored

3.What impressed(……留下印象) Lizzie most about Rothera was that _______.

A.people walked around in T-shirts B.there was a special training course

C.the weather was sometimes warm D.the scenery changed every day
