A famous teacher was speaking to the stu...

A famous teacher was speaking to the students at our school. He began his lesson by holding up a ¥100 bill. Then he said to the three hundred students, “Who would like this ¥100 bill?” The students began to put up their hands at once.

Then he said, “I am going to give this ¥100 to one of you, but first, let me do this.” He then made the bill into a ball. Then he said, “Who wants it now?” The hands went back into the air.

“Well,” he said, “What if I do this?” and he dropped it on the floor and stepped on it. He picked up the dirty, crumpled bill and said, “Who still wants it?” Hands went back into the air.

“My friends,” he said, “you have learned a valuable lesson today. No matter (无论) what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not go down in value (价值). It was still worth ¥ l00!”

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and stepped on by the chances we take and the things that happen to us. We feel as if we are worth nothing. But remember, no matter what has happened to you, you will never lose your value: you are always valuable to those people who love you. Your value doesn’t come from what you do or whom you know, but WHO YOU ARE.

You are special and valuable. Don’t ever forget it!

1.Even though it was dirty, the money _______.

A.still went up in value

B.was worth nothing

C.didn’t go down in value

C.who hate us D.who love us

3.Your value doesn’t come from what you do but _______.

A.who you know B.who made you

C.who you remember D.who you are

4.The sentence “Hands went back into the air” means “_______”.

A.the students put up their hands again

B.the students put down their hands

C.the students put their hands behind their backs again

D.the students put their hands in front of them

5.Why did the famous teacher use a ¥100 bill at his lesson?

A.Because he wanted to make the bill into a ball.

B.Because he used to drop a bill on the floor and stepped on it.

C.Because he was going to give the bill to one of his students.

D.Because he wanted to make the students know what value was.

No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not go down in value. 2.根据第五段中的…you are always valuable to those people who love you. Your value doesn’t come from what you do or whom you know, but who you are,but WHO YOU ARE可知你的价值不在于你做什么或你认识谁,而在于你是谁;故选D。 4. Who would like this¥100 bill? The students began to put up their hands at once.老师第二次问Who wants it now? The hands went back into the air.老师第三次问:Who still wants it? Hands went back into the air. Hands went back into the air中的back有类似again的含义,故选A。 5.

In the past, working people in Britain only had holidays on “holy” (religious) days: Sundays, Christmas and Easter. Now most people have about four weeks of holiday time every year plus public (公共的) holidays (also called “bank holidays”).

When?

Most British workers take a two-week holiday in July or August. School children are on holiday from the end of July to the start of September. Taking a second holiday break in winter or spring is also becoming more popular in the UK.

The coldest months of winter have arrived. But Woodchurch High School in the UK has had a winter coat rule. It has banned (禁止)students from wearing expensive coats after Christmas.

This is to stop “poverty-shaming(贫困羞辱) among its students. Coat brands like Canada Goose and Moncler sell for £1,000(8, 674yuan), a cost that only the richest families are able to afford. Poor students feel left out when they see others wear these coats.

“These coats cause a lot of unfairness,” head teacher Rebekah Phillips told CNN. “They stigmatize(使……感到羞愧) students and parents who are less rich.”

Most parents are happy with the rule, saying that school shouldn't be a place where students’ economic(经济上的) background distracts(使分心) them from learning. Small changes like this have led low-income(低收入的) students to become busier in school.

But some people don't agree with it. They ask why children shouldn't be allowed to wear clothes that keep them warm in winter. “Each child should be allowed to choose what he or she wants to wear,” Jillian Roberts, a teacher at the University of Victoria in Canada said.

But Woodchurch isn’t the first school to take such steps. In May, a UK primary school didn’t allow to bring expensive pencil cases. The US state of New Mexico even passed a law saying that it is against the law to separate or humiliate (羞辱)a child who can't pay for his or her lunch at school.

When 4-year-old British Prince George started his first day of school in September, 2017, Chinese language was on his course.

And he wasn't alone According to a report in September, about 51 percent of UK parents want their children to learn Chinese, as it's believed to be one of the most useful languages to know.

In fact, the popularity of Chinese drove the UK government to launch the Chinese Excellence Program in September last year. Its goal is to make at least 5, 000 British state middle school students speak Chinese well by 2020.

The language has become the second most spoken foreign language in the US, after only Spanish (西班牙语), with over2. 1 million speakers, according to a survey.

Many US famous people such as Facebook founder(脸书创始人) Mark Zuckerberg and Obama's daughter, Malia Obama, study Chinese as a second language.

So far, 67 countries and regions (地区)have included Chinese in their national course, so why are so many countries crazy about learning Chinese?

One reason could be that as China continues to develop quickly, Chinese is increasingly becoming a useful tool for people's personal and professional growth. “I think everyone believes that China will be the next great superpower(超级大国)... even if it' s not a superpower like America. It still has an important influence in the future,” said Aisling McCaffrey from Canada, who studied at the Renmin University of China, “Learning Chinese is the best way to make sure that you can be part of that growth.”

This opinion was shared by former(前任的) British Prime Minister David Cameron, who urged(呼吁) British students to learn Chinese to “seal(抓住)tomorrows business deals” in 2013.

A.Chinese is on the course.

3._______ asked British students to learn Chinese.

A.Malia Obama B.David Cameron C.Prince George D.Mark Zuckerberg

4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Aisling McCaffery is from Canada.

B.Learning Chinese is the best way to be famous.

C.There are more than 2.1 million Chinese speakers in the US.

D.67 countries and regions have included Chinese in their national course.
