"Fall" and"Autumn"

What season is it in October? If you ask people from the UK, they will tell you it's "autumn". But if you go to the US, you will find that people useautumn" orfall".

According to Dictionary .com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was the first to describe this season. During this season, crops (庄稼) would become ripe (成熟) and farmers would have a big harvest. So in Old English, this season was simply called "harvest" .

Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word "harvest" became less useful. English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling itthe fall of the leaf", orfall" for short.

But at the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word "autompne" and the Latin "autumnus" came to England. "Fall" as the word for this season disappeared slowly.

At the same time, people in the UK were making their first trips to North America. They brought both the words“fall" andautumn" with them. That's why today's Americans have two names for one season.

That’s why today’s Americans have two names for one season. 此同时,英国人第一次去北美旅行。他们带来了“秋天”和“秋天”两个词。这就是为什么今天的美国人一个季节有两个名字。可知,这是名字的发展历史,英语中“历史”是history,由对应的表格内容可知,这里应该用单词本身,故答案为History。 4.根据文中During this season, crops (庄稼) would become ripe (成熟) and farmers would have a big harvest. So in Old English, this season was simply called “harvest”在这个季节里,作物会成熟,农民会有大丰收。所以在古英语中,这个季节被简单地称为“收获”。可知,在古英语中,被称为“收获”是因为农民在这个季节里会有大丰收,故答案为have a big harvest。. 5.根据文中With fewer people farming, the word “harvest” became less useful. English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short. 随着农业人口的减少,“收获”这个词变得不那么有用了。说英语的人需要一个不同的季节名称。他们知道树叶是在这个季节从树上掉下来的,所以人们开始把它叫做“落叶”,或者简称为“秋天”。可知,“fall”代替了之前的“harvest”,英语中“代替”是take the place of,而动作发生在过去,所以应该用过去时,故答案为took the place of。 6.根据文中But at the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus” came to England. 但是在17世纪末,秋天,从法语中的“autompne”和拉丁语中的“autumnus”来到了英国。可知,“autumn”这里词来自French and Latin,而句子动作发生在过去,所以应该用过去时,故答案为came from。
