Recently, my college degree has just been completed. The last project was called “Smile”,可知,最后一个课题是要求作者去跟三个人微笑,固定搭配ask sb to do sth要求某人做某事,而主语I和谓语动词ask之间是被动关系,所以要用被动语态。 As I turned around to see what was happening, an unpleasant body smell came to my nose, and two poor men stood just behind me“当我转过身看看发生了什么的时候,一股难闻的体臭飘进了我的鼻子,两个穷人就站在我后面”,可知,空格处表示“当我正在排队的时候,周围的人突然都开始后退”,所以空格处填suddenly。 根据two poor men stood just behind me“两位穷人就站在我后面”,可知,空格处表示“在我旁边”,固定搭配close to sb “靠近某人”。 根据he counted the few coins that he had“他数着他仅有的几个硬币”,可知,只有咖啡是他们所能负担起的,所以空格处填afford。 根据空格后all eyes in the restaurant were set on me“餐厅里的所有眼睛都盯着我”,可知,空格处表示“注意”。

Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.

According to a new study published in Current Biology, a significant reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about potential (潜在的) dangers. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment.

For the study, 35 young volunteers were told to sleep in a lab for several days. Meanwhile, researchers watched their brain activities.

According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity reduced as days went by, falling even to the point of complete calm. In this process, the volunteers got an increasingly better sleep experience.

The findings suggest that the different rhythms (节奏) of the sides of the brain influence our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. Thus, the brain can’t relax and is sensitive to anything strange in the surroundings, just as it is in the daytime.

“At some level, the brain is continuing to analyze(分析) things, even though you don’t realize the analysis,” US professor Jerome Siegel told Smithsonian Magazine. “If something unusual happens – if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock – you can be alert (警惕的).”

More surprisingly, this situation is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake.

If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

When you're in school, the last thing you want to do is to work on weekends. There's homework to do, sports to play, fun to have. But our parents may persuade(劝说) us to find a job to earn money and get some life experience. When I was a teenager, I had to deliver the newspapers to people's homes. Then I got a Saturday job at a supermarket: putting everything in order on the shelves and working as a shopkeeper.

Today in the UK you can work from the age of 13 and many children have part-time jobs. It is almost seen as an adult ceremony. It's an independent experience. Teenagers agreed that it taught them valuable lessons about working and managing money with adults. So that's not a bad thing!

Some research suggests that not working on Saturdays or holidays may be harmful to one's later life. But recent statistics(数据统计)show 20of the students have given up having part-time jobs in the past three years.

So does this mean British teenagers are now more afraid of hard work? Probably not. Some experts believe young people feel that going out to work hinders(阻碍) their performance in school, they are now under more pressure(压力) to study hard, get good grades and have a good job in the long run. In fact, the key is to keep a balance between taking a part-time job and having enough time to study and rest.

Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. A 13-year-old girl named Rachel works in a shop on Saturday. The doctors and nurses wore the same suits, hats and masks, and it was difficult to tell who was who when doing an operation. To solve the problem, Rob Hackett, an anesthesiologist(麻醉师) in Sydney, Australia, had an idea to write his name on his hat. At the beginning, his workmates didn't take it seriously, even someone laughed at him, “Don’t you remember your name?”

Dr. Rob showed his thoughts on the website Bored Panda, “As we all know, doctors are a stressful job, and when facing with life and death danger, we have to race against time to try to save patients' lives.
