Tennis has been called a gentleman’ s sport. At first, tennis was a sport of only kings in France and England. It was played differently from today. In 1874, the first tennis club was opened. Since then, there have been more and more tennis clubs and games in many countries. 61Now tennis is one of the most popular games in the world.

There are three main kinds of courts depending on the materials used for the court surface: clay courts, hard courts and grass courts.

The clay court is the most common in Europe. The French Open is played on this kind of court.

The U.S. Open and the Australian Open use hard courts. Hard courts can vary(变化)in speed, although they are faster than clay courts but not as fast as grass courts.

At tennis games, we find young boys or girls who rush into the court to collect balls during a game. They are called ball boys or girls. They are chosen from applicant(申请人),and then trained before the game begins.

62It is an honor for kids to be in a big game. They are often given a lot of free things, like clothes, caps, even shoes, and the most important is the chance to be near tennis stars. They will learn a lot from the stars. Many tennis stars were ball boys or girls when they were younger.
