Weekday mornings are very busy for US middle school students. People are running into each other, shouting across the house, knocking on the bathroom door and always, always running late. When you’re late for the carpool, though, you also make everyone else late.

When your school doesn’t have a bus, and you live too far away to walk, you need a carpool. A carpool is a group of people sharing the responsibility (责任) of driving their kids to school in the morning. There are usually four or five kids in a carpool and their parents take turns to drive the kids in their cars. Someone’s car smells like wet dogs. Some kids get to eat desserts (甜点) for breakfast and some parents shout so much that all you try to do is to stay

quiet and go unnoticed. When your mum or dad drives the carpool, your classmates get a close- up look at how strange your parents can be. It might be your first sociological (社会学的) study and your first time to work with others.Teamwork is really important in the carpool because nobody wants to make everyone else late. It’s a great lesson in responsibility. Imagine (想象) sitting in the car outside of a classmate’s house, watching the watch and counting the seconds. Then you start to understand how your carpool friends might feel when you are still inside the house at 7:48. You really begin to learn all your real life lessons just moments before the start of school—in the carpool.

Coke arrived at a lonely house, but he didn’t go into the room. He listened for a moment but he could not hear anything at all. “Why is it so quiet? Are the police waiting for me in there?” he asked himself. He went to the front door and pushed it. To his surprise, it was open! He went in very quietly. The room was clean, small and very warm.

Suddenly Coke froze. There was someone else in the room. He could feel it! He turned around quickly and, at the same time, put his hand on his pocket. There was a small knife there. He saw an old woman. She had a dish in her hands and there was a sweet smell of meat and vegetables. She did not look afraid. She did not even look surprised.

I have been reading Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. In this book, Fern lives on a farm. At the start of the book, a piglet (小猪) has recently been born. He is very small. Fern’s father is going to kill him. But Fern saves the piglet. She calls him Wilbur and feeds him. When he is big

enough, Wilbur goes to live in a barn (谷仓) that belongs to Fern’s uncle. In the barn, Wilbur makes a friend called Charlotte. She is a spider (蜘蛛). Wilbur finds out that Fern’s uncle is going to kill him for meat. Wilbur asks Charlotte for help. Charlotte helps by writing words in her web so that people will think Wilbur is a special pig.

My favourite part of the book is when Wilbur has gone to the fair. The family have been  at the fair too. They have helped Wilbur to get ready for a competition, but now they have gone home. Wilbur is nervous and Charlotte is working on a new web. This is an exciting part of the book. The best character is Templeton, the rat. He is funny. I also like the geese. I think the writer makes them seem real.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a nice story but the ending is a bit sad.
