Advertisement is an important part of our lives. We are so used to them that we often do not even realize how many we see and hear in a day!

What is an advertisement?

An advertisement provides information and uses creative languages and attractive pictures to encourage people to buy a product or service or believe in an idea. Newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radios and televisions are the most places to find advertisements. There are two main types of advertisements—commercial advertisements and public service advertisements (PSAs). A commercial advertisement is one which someone has paid for to promote(提升) a product or service. PSAs are often placed for free, and are to used to educate people about health, safety, or anything that affects public welfare(福利).

Does an advertisement tell people the complete truth?

China has strong laws to protect people from advertisements that lie or try to make people believe untrue promise about products or services. However, we still must be careful with the methods used in advertisements to try and sell us things. Even if an ad does not lie, it does not mean it tells the complete truth. One toothpaste ad says “Bright-teeth fights bad breath!” the advertisers want you to read the word “fights” and think that the toothpaste cures bad breath, but it does not say that! We must not fall for this kind of trick!

Public service advertisements.

Not all ads play tricks on us though. PSAs use some of the same methods, but they are made to serve the public. PSAs are meant to teach us and help us lead better lives. You have probably seen or heard some of them yourself, like “Yes to life, no to drugs” and “Knowledge changes life”. These ads deal with large social issues(问题). There are also PSAs that educate people about public service projects, such as Project Hope. All of these ads are meant to be helpful, and you can often learn a lot by following the advice they give.

Try to remember: think about why you should do or buy the things the ad suggests. We all want to be smart about what we believe, so be smart about advertisements.

Advertisement is an important part of our lives. An advertisement provides information and uses creative languages and attractive pictures to encourage people to buy a product or service or believe in an idea可知,这句话告诉了我们什么是广告,广告就是提供一些信息或使用一些创造性的语言和图片,来鼓励人们去买某种商品或服务或者是让人们相信一种观点。 Newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radios and televisions are the most places to find advertisements可知,报纸、杂志、网络、收音机、电视等都是可以发现广告的很常见的地方。 Newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radios and televisions are the most places to find advertisements可知,能看到广告的地方有报纸、杂志、网络、收音机和电视。 An advertisement provides information and uses creative languages and attractive pictures to encourage people to buy a product or service or believe in an idea可知,广告是提供信息、使用创造性的语言和吸引人的图片来鼓励人们相信他们的。 There are two main types of advertisements—commercial advertisements and public service advertisements (PSAs)可知,这里说的是广告的两种类型。 A commercial advertisement is one which someone has paid for to promote(提升) a product or service可知,商业广告是有某人来付钱做的广告,目的是提升产品或服务。 However, we still must be careful with the methods used in advertisements to try and sell us things可知,对于商业广告,我们要小心里面的一些圈套,他们会使用一些方法让我们相信他们。 PSAs are often placed for free可知,公共服务广告经常是免费的。 All of these ads are meant to be helpful, and you can often learn a lot by following the advice they give.

Mike Myers is a teacher at Chauncey Rose High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. Last year, he taught his students about the world's rainforests. They learned that rainforests are important because the plants and animals of the rainforest give us food, wood, and medicine.

Destruction of the world's rainforests is a serious problem. Unluckily, rainforests are disappearing at a rate of 80 acres per minute! As part of a class project! Myers' students bought three acres of rainforest in Central America.  They paid $ 25 per acre.  The students hope that the land they bought will be protected and not destroyed. The students became so interested in rainforests that they decided to get a closer look at a real rainforest.

So last June, Myers and four of his students took a boat ride down a river. They saw alligators and crocodiles. In the middle of the week, a guide took Myers and his students into the rainforest. The monkeys were not happy that we were in their forest. They broke small branches off the trees and threw them at us," one of the students said. "It was a great learning experience for all of us," said Myers.

Each student chose something specific about Costa Rica to study involving the plants, animals, food, and culture. During the last few days the group had time to do fun activities They went whitewater rafting and horseback riding, and visited Costa Rica's active volcano

To get an extra 14 years of life, don't smoke, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink alcohol in a proper amount. That is according to a study published this Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal .

After tracking more than 20, 000 people aged 45 to 79 years in the UK from about 1993 to 2008, Kay-Tee Khaw of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues found that people who adopted these four healthy habits lived an average of 14 years longer than who didn't.

"We're known for a long time that these behaviors are good things to do, but we've not seen this benefit before," said Susan Jebb, head of Nutrition and Health at Britain's Medical Research Council. "The benefit was also seen regardless of whether or not people were fat and social class they came from. "

Study participants(参与者) scored a point each for not smoking, regular physical activity, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and moderate alcohol intake.

Public health experts said they hoped the study would inspire governments to introduce policies helping people to adopt these changes. But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy behaviors would surely gain 14 years.

"We can't say that any person could gain 14 years by doing these things, " said Dr Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization. "The 14 years is an average across the population of what's theoretically(埋论上地) possible. "

"Most people know that things like a good diet matter and that smoking isn't good for them," Susan Jebb said. "We need to work on providing people with much more practical support to help them change. "

1.We can infer from the passage that _____________ .

A. people are unaware of the harm of their bad habits

B. drinking alcohol does no harm to our health and helps us live longer

C. the government should make people change their bad habits by force

D. not everyone will live 14 years longer by adopting the four healthy habits

2.Which of the following DOESN'T belong to the four healthy habits?

A. Eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

B. Doing proper exercises in the morning every day.

C. Drinking alcohol in the proper amount.

D. Having a physical examination every year.

3.Which of the following can be inferred according to the passage?

A. Susan Jebb did not take part in the study.

B. The study observed people as well as tested specific changes.

C. There s no need for people under 45 to adopt these good habits.

D. Only those from first class can benefit from these healthy behaviors.

4.What should be the best title of this passage?

A. Smoking Cuts You 14 Years    B. How to Live a Healthier Life

C. Healthy Habits May Give 14 Years    D. How to Make Your Life Longer than Others

Good tips for you

When you travel in other places, you'd better do things as the following:

Visiting other places just like visiting the home of your friends, you have to respect the place, respect the lifestyle, respect the culture and respect the people there.

Never complain about the differences between your place and the place you are

visiting, because no place is the same.  If you expect everything is the same as in  your place, why do you travel? Remember, complaint won't make your trip enjoyable, just makes you look rude. And it seems that you don't know how to respect others and you don't know much about this world.

Respect and follow the culture and the lifestyle of people of other places. Don't try to apply the way people in your place do to other places. If you do so, you will only be an unwelcome visitor in that place. So, why make yourself unwelcome and look silly?

Admire the differences of other places that you are visiting. It doesn't mean losing face.
