Every December millions of Christmas cards go through the post office. There are pictures of stars or snow or Christmas trees. In these days it is hard to think of a Christmas without Christmas cards yet a hundred and fifty years ago there was nothing at all. Here is just a story of the way in which they started. Some boys of those days at boarding school had to write a special piece of English at Christmas time. This was to be sent to their parents so they could see the boys’ work had got better during the year.

Young people like to make little drawing in the paper when they write something. These boys were the same. They drew little pictures all around the writing. After a time the pictures become more important than the writing. These were the first Christmas cards.

The middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won't only have high marks.

Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else's work in an exam? Don't do it again! That's not something an honest student should do.

Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is the Bird-Loving Month in China. You should join it! That way you can learn more about animals and how to protect them.

Have you ever argued with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others not only yourself.

Be open to new ideas. Don't look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them because new ideas make life better.

Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don't let it happen to you. If you have to go home late you should let your parents know.

Dear Mrs. Smith,

I was a student of yours in Grade Six, and I hope you still remember me. I'm writing this letter because I want to let you know that the school year with you was important and special to me. It made a big contribution (贡献) to my life.

I know I was very quiet in your class, and you never said much to me. But you did something that made a big difference in my life. You see, all through my beginning five years in school, I hated to read. Books were just words that had very little to do with me, and I was bored by them. I'll never forget the first day of Grade Six when you took out a thick book and began to read the story to our class. Your voice seemed to change with the people in the story, and you drew pictures in my mind as you read aloud. Since that day, I couldn't wait until after lunch when you would read to the class. You read us all kinds of wonderful books.

During the summer after my year in your class, I missed hearing the stories you would read. So one day I picked up a book and read it all on my own. I found out that could make the words interesting too. Now, I love to read! Thank you for opening the world of books for me.

Yours,

Linda
