Soccer is the world’s favorite sport. In America people call it football. It has around 3 billion fans — nearly half the world’s population! 1. That’s 4 percent of the world’s population!

2. Many people in old days played early forms of this modern game. Cu ju (蹴踘), a ball-kicking game in China, was reported as early as 2,500 B.C. Around the same time in Greece, people were also playing a similar ball game without using their hands.

But modern soccer didn’t become official (官方的) until 1863. An Englishman called Cobb Morley introduced the idea of a football association (联盟). 3. From then on, other associations in countries were set up. They came together to make up the FIFA, which organizes the World Cup. Thirty-two national teams play in the World Cup every four years.

It’s not easy to tell what makes soccer so popular. 4. Soccer needs only two feet and a ball. This makes it a sport that developing countries can easily play. Some of the sport’s best players come from these poor nations.

5. The sport’s no-hands rule makes beautiful dance-like movements on the field. What’s more, this sport excites the heart. Teams might score only a few times each match, so matches can turn around suddenly.

No one knows which country will win at the next World Cup. But one thing is certain: The world will be watching.

According to a new report, Americans drink more soda (苏打) than ever before. Do your parents ever try to limit how much soda you drink? Do they say drinking too much isn’t good for you?

Right now, in New York, Mayor (市长) Michael Bloomberg also limits how much soda you can have — and it is not only for you but also for adults! Starting in March, 2013, places like movie theaters, restaurants and sports centers, can’t sell sodas larger than 473 ml. Sellers who break the ban (禁令) will face a $200 fine. But you can still get whatever size you want at supermarkets.

Why is drinking too much soda unhealthy for you? A study shows that for every soda a child drinks every day, their obesity (肥胖) risk appears to jump 60%. In New York, more than half of adults and nearly 40% of children are overweight. Obesity kills thousands of New Yorkers every year and the city spends as much as $4 billion a year on medical care for overweight and obese people.

New York has a population of about 8 million. Of course, it’s impossible for all New Yorkers to agree on the ban. There are different opinions. Keith Aiken believes the ban can help fight teen’s obesity. “Clearly, soda causes teens obesity. We have to do something.” he says. Chuck Kallenbach doesn’t think the ban can work. He says, “I can’t buy a large cup of soda, but I can buy two small cups.” Michael Tansini says, “Whatever size cup I want is my own business. No one should limit it!”

根据短文内容,判断下列句子正误。正确的用“A”表示,不正确的用“B”表示。

Indian scientists have designed a new device (设备) that

they hope will solve one of the biggest problems with the use

of solar energy. They call the device a solar tree. Solar trees

have metal “branches” (分枝). Each branch holds a solar panel (太阳能电池板). These panels have flat surfaces that collect energy from the sun and turn it into electricity.

Daljit Singh Bedi is the chief (首席的) scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in India. Bedi says the shape of the solar trees makes it possible to fit more solar panels in a space than traditional systems do. This means less land would be needed to produce solar energy. “It takes about four square meters of space to produce energy. However, 400 square meters of space would be required in the past to produce the same energy,” he says.

Scientists believe the energy that a solar tree collects will be enough to power five homes. The solar tree will make it easier to provide solar energy for homes in cities. The trees will also take less space from farmers in the countryside. And that way people are able to use 10 to 15 percent more energy.

Amit Kumar is a senior engineer of the Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi. He says that it is still not clear how useful these new developments in solar power technology are. “Only when we put those trees on a large scale (规模) will we be able to get that answer,” he says.

1.Indian scientists have solved a big problem with the use of solar energy.

2.Solar trees can save land and produce more energy.

3.Not every scientist agrees that solar trees are useful at present.

4.Solar trees are widely used in India.

5.The passage mainly introduces how to use solar energy.
