IX.任务型阅读(共5小题, 每小题2分,计10分)(2014北京房山一模)

You may think that inventions are far away from your everyday life. But in fact, almost everyone can invent. It’s just that they do not realize that their idea could be the start of an invention. Once inventors see their ideas have some practical value, they don’t let them run away.

For example, the inventors of the dishwasher, American Josephine Cochrane, loved to give dinner parties. But she found it took too long to wash her dishes by hand. She decided that a machine could do the job faster. So, in 1886, she began to make one for herself.

Here are the steps to create inventions. The first and most important step is to find the problem. Start by looking at what is wrong with things you see now and ask people around if they remember ever saying, “I wish someone would invent something for...” Then you might notice situations(情况) or things in need of improvement. The next step is to think about possible solutions. An invention is a new way of solving a problem. So think of many and unusual ways. You can often come up with a solution to a problem by looking at it from a different side.

The hardest part of inventing is coming up with a problem and finding a solution. Once you have an idea, you can always get help building your invention. This problem-solving technique can also work in your everyday lives. So, why not try it in your studies, in your relationship with others, or even in the way you look at the world?

So, in 1886, she began to make one for herself.可知她决定一个机器能洗碗更快,所以他为自己就制作了一个机器,故此处one代指的是洗碗机,故为a dishwasher 3.根据第三段的The first and most important step is to find the problem.和 Then you might notice situations(情况) or things in need of improvement. Many kids help parents to do chores such as washing the dishes, cleaning the floors and taking out the trash in the house. In return, some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as 20 minutes to play computer games.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards(奖赏) for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator. She believes that if kids get rewards, they will think that work isn’t worth doing unless you get something in return. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it. “Every house is a team effort,” Susie said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities to keep our home clean.

Other people have different opinions. They believe that money or other rewards can motivate kids to do more chores. It also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. Now, there are also apps(应用软件) that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and digital gifts that can be used either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points after doing chores. Kids can exchange their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall. “Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards," says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster. “Kids need positive(积极的) power to make them do chores.

What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return?

When Abraham Lincoln was young, he worked in a store. One day a woman came into the store and bought some things. They added up to two dollars and six and a quarter cents.

The bill was paid, and the woman was satisfied. But the young storekeeper, not feeling quite sure about his calculations(计算), added up the things again. To his surprise, he found that it should have been but two dollars.

“I’ve made her pay six and a quarter cents more,” said young Abe, upset.

It was an unimportant thing, and many salespersons would forget it, but Abe was too careful for that.

The money must be paid back, he decided.

At night, he closed the store and walked to the home of his customer. He explained the matter, paid over the six and a quarter cents, and returned satisfied.

Here is another story of young Lincoln's strict honesty. A woman entered the store and asked for half a pound of tea. The young man weighed it out. This was the last sale of the day.

The next morning, when beginning his duties, Abe discovered a four-ounce weight on the scales(磅砰). It flashed upon him at once that he had used this in the sale last night, and so, of course, given his customer short weight. Many people would not have been much worried by this discovery. But Abe weighed out four ounces of the tea, shut up the store, and carried it to the customer. I think that the name, so often given in late times to President Lincoln, of “Honest Old Abe", was well deserved(应得的).

3.When did he find his mistake in the second story?

A. At the end of that day.    B. In the middle of that day.

C. At the end of the next day.    D. At the beginning of the next day.

4.What can we know from the second story?

A. Abe wasn't worried by this discovery.

B. Abe didn’t notice he put a four-ounce weight on the scales.

C. Abe gave the customer enough weight at last.

D. Abe gave his customer short weight on purpose.

5.We can know that Abe was ________ from the passage.

A. easy to get worried    B. confident but careless
