When I waited in the living room, I saw my dad come up the path with a white envelope in his hand. I had waited all day for this. As soon as he set foot in the house, I reached over him to get it. He threw the envelope on the table and said that it was nothing to get excited about.

I was looking forward to seeing my report for my first year in high school. I opened the report and saw that I came in first in my class. I was feeling so excited. But when I saw my dad’s cold face and heard his cold words, I was really hurt by how he ignored (忽略) my hard work. I didn’t know why but said nothing, and just shut the door with a bang. I got a good mark and I wanted to share my happiness with someone, but I felt alone.

Thinking over what had happened to us, I suddenly realized something. I was so busy studying that I had kept away from my family unconsciously (不知不觉地). We used to watch movies and play tennis together on weekend afternoons. I wondered when that had stopped. Then I realized they had not stopped but I just no longer joined them.

My family is very important to me, so I do not want to destroy that relationship. I wanted to apologize for my rude behavior, because without their support, my achievements meant nothing. As I went over to him, my dad said, “You’ve done well, and your mother and I are proud of you. But we do not want to use your achievements to define (定义) who you are.”

Although my head may be in the clouds with all my ambitions, my family keeps my feet on the ground. Whatever you do, remember family is always important.

When I was in collegeI heard about a book titled “Looking Out for Number One”. I never read the bookand I didn’t like it. I think it was because the title_______I hadn’t been taught to be so selfish that I should focus on only me. I thought I needed to help others andalong the wayI would also help myself. Many years after seeing the book about looking out for number oneI’m realizing number onemeis the person I should care first. Jeffrey Gitomer asks the question“Who is the most important person in the world?” Most people answer“the customer.” He then asks“If there were only two people left in the worldthe customer and youwho would you want to survive (生存)?” Now the answer is me.

It makes sense that if we can’t help ourselves firstwe will never be ready to help others. We all need to learn to control our lives and make the best decisions for ourselves. That will put us in the position to help others in the future. But many of us are slow to understand this.

It is said that happiness will bring successbut success doesn’t always bring happiness. We all want to be happy and successful. Some of us can be very happy when our basic needs are met and our family are safe. Others will seek for high levels of successthinking that will bring happiness. I’m sure we can think of some people who are very successfulaccording to the world’s standards (标准)but they appear to be unhappy sometimes. Several months ago, my husband and I were on an island for a long weekend with our five-year-old twin daughters. As we went back and forth about what to do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what they wanted to do. “We want to go to the butterfly museum,” said Emily and Hanna.

As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands of beautiful butterflies. They all flapped their colorful wings.

My girls were jumping up and down, and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun.

I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious (好奇的), and asked, “How long do butterflies live?”

She said: “About ten days.”

“What can butterflies do in ten days?” I asked.

The guide stopped, looked at me, and said, “They make the world a more beautiful place.”

“Wow,” I said, “I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you.”

After we said goodbye, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus our gifts on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference.

Appreciate (欣赏) the impact you can have on your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Like a butterfly, you have your own way of making the world more beautiful for everyone.
