Tiffany, a 16-year-old girl, was very shy. Last September, her best friend, Sophie, moved abroad with her family because she had to continue her studies in America. She even said she would not come back for at least a few years. 1. “I was really sad the moment I heard the bad news and I didn't know what to do,” Tiffany recalled. “I shut myself in my room for a whole week. It was then that my aunt took me to a sports club one Saturday and I saw so many young people playing different kinds of sports there. I signed up for a beginners’ course in volleyball and since then I have been playing this sport. Now I practice twice a week there. It is wonderful playing sports in this club and I have made lots of friends as well. 2.

The most basic aim of playing sports is that you can improve your health even if you are not very good at sports.  Besides, you can get to know a circle of people at your age while playing sports. 3. Since she joined the sports club, she has opened up herself and now she has become very active and enjoys meeting and talking with others.

For most people, that is one of the reasons why they join a sports club. 4. You don’t have to sit down and talk to strangers. You go in for sports and it is easier to understand your partners on the same team. Now Tiffany is quite popular with her friends and she has also become more confident.

5. The mind needs exercise as well as the body.

A. Try to do some sports.

B. They don’t take plenty of exercise.

C. Tiffany used to be a very quiet girl.

D. Tiffany became lonely and helpless.

E. I think I’m good at singing and dancing.

F. What’s more, I feel I am much healthier than before.

G. You can get to know other young people who have similar interests.

Last September, her best friend, Sophie, moved abroad with her family because she had to continue her studies in America. I was really sad the moment I heard the bad news她很伤心,因此应选D。 2. It is wonderful playing sports in this club and I have made lots of friends as well可知,她在那里和开心,还交了很多朋友。 Since she joined the sports club, she has opened up herself and now she has become very active and enjoys meeting and talking with others可知,这句话介绍的是现在Tiffany的改变,因此前面的这个空说的是过去的Tiffany。故应选C。 4. You don’t have to sit down and talk to strangers你不必坐下和陌生人聊天可知应选G。 5. 故应选A。

What is time? Is it a thing to be saved or spent or wasted, like money? Or is it something we have no control over, like the weather? Is it the same all over the world? That’s an easy question, you say. Wherever you go, a minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 60 minutes, a day is 24 hours, and so forth. Well, maybe. But in America, time is more than that. Americans see time as a valuable resource(资源). Maybe that’s why they like the expression, “Time is money.”

Because Americans believe time is a limited resource, they try to keep and manage it. People in the US often attend meetings or read books on time management. It seems that they all want to organize their time better. People try their best to press more life out of their time.

To Americans, being on time is a way of showing respect(尊重) for other people’s time. Being more than 10 minutes late usually calls for an apology(道歉) and an explanation. People who are running late often call ahead to let others know that they can’t be on time. Of course, the less formal(正式的) the situation is, the less important it is to be exactly on time. At informal get-togethers, for example, people often arrive as much as 30 minutes late. But they usually don’t try that at work.

American lifestyles show how much people respect the time of others. When people plan an event, they often set the time days or weeks before it. Once the time is fixed, it is almost impossible to change it. If people want to come to your house for a friendly visit, they will usually call first to make sure it is convenient. Only very close friends will just “drop by” unannounced. Also, people seldom call others late at night for fear they might be in bed. The time may be different, but most people think twice about calling after 10:00 pm.

Even Americans would agree that no one can master time. Time, like money, slips all too easily through our finger. And time, like the weather, is very hard to predict. However, time is one of life’s most valuable gifts.
