At informal get-togethers, for example, people often arrive as much as 30 minutes late. But they usually don’t try that at work.
American lifestyles show how much people respect the time of others. When people plan an event, they often set the time days or weeks before it. Once the time is fixed, it is almost impossible to change it. If people want to come to your house for a friendly visit, they will usually call first to make sure it is convenient. Only very close friends will just “drop by” unannounced. Also, people seldom call others late at night for fear they might be in bed. I found out one time that helping someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me said something to me in a low voice, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned(倾斜) over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I could lend her a pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink(墨水) and would not write. I took a pen out of my pencil box and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been handed in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students could leave.
