One day last summer, watching the boys and girls trying to catch butterflies, I remembered something happened when I was young. When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina, something happened to me that stopped me forever from wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.

We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening the mockingbirds(模仿鸟) would come and rest in the trees and sings.    1.    I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician.

   2.  At first, the bird flew about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.

I had left the cage out, and on the second day my new pet’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it.  3.

Certainly the mother knew better than I about how to feed her baby.

The following morning when I went to see how my bird was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened!     4.

Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist(鸟学家), happened to be visiting my father at the time. Hearing me crying over the death of my bird, he explained what had occurred. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poisonous(有毒的)berries(干果).     5.

Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.

A. I had taken good care of my little bird.

B. I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage.

C. I was pleased to see this.

D. No musician can sing more beautiful than the birds.

E. She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in cage.

1.D 根据上文and every evening the mockingbirds(模仿鸟) would come and rest in the trees and sings可知,下文是No musician can sing more beautiful than the birds. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it婴儿鸟吃了她给它带来的一切 可知下文是I was pleased to see this. Idiscovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened! I had taken good care of my little bird我照顾好了我的小鸟。故选A。 She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in cage她认为对于他来说死掉比呆在笼子里更好.。

Every day when I enter the classroom, I will take a look at the wall beside my seat. You will find nothing special about this old wall if you just look at it. But for the students in my class, it is a special wall. Take a look at it, and you will get to know the real feelings and thought of us.

In the middle of the wall, there is a big “VICTORY”. It was written in pencil. I guess it must have been written by someone who got a good mark in an exam.

A little higher above the formulas, there is a poem. It only has two sentences. It reads: All those sweet memories have disappeared. Like tears dropping in the heavy rain.

Oh! It must have been written at the end of the last semester in middle school. Classmates had to leave school and good friends had to part. What a sad poem!

If you look at the wall more carefully, you will find many other interesting things, like a crying face, or a happy face, and other patterns(图案). There are still some patterns and letters that I can’t understand, but they all show the feelings of the students who drew them.

For years, the wall has witnessed(目睹) all the things that have happened in the classroom. I don’t know how it will be next year, two years from now, or even ten years from now. But I hope more smiling faces will be drawn on it.

1.There is          special on the wall.

A. nothing           B. anything           C. everything         D. something

2.What was the “VICTORY” written in?

A. Pen.             B. Brush.             C. Pencil             D. Chalk

3.When must the poem have been written?

A. At the beginning of the last semester.

B. At the end of the year.

C. At the end of the last semester.

D. At the beginning of the last month.

4. The underlined word “part” means “         ” in Chinese.

5.What’s the best title of the passage?

A. The Picture of the Wall

Today there are many more fires than in the past. Over 100 000 wildfires burn each year in America. Russia has 20 000 to 35 000 wildfires every year. Australia has on average 60 000 each year. These fires destroy(损害) huge areas of forests and burn hundreds of homes.

Many experts believe there are several reasons for this sudden increase in fires. The first reason is climate(气候)change. Recent weather has been warmer and drier. This leads to dangerous fire conditions. When lightning strikes(发生雷击), dry grass easily catches fire. Hot winds add to the problem. The wind spreads a fire quickly. In 2010, Russia had the hottest and driest summer in a century. In just one month, 500 fires destroyed over 2 000 homes. Some people lost their lives.

Traditional fire-fighting practices are another reason for the increase in fires. In America, firefighters used to quickly put out every fires. They didn’t allow the grass and trees to burn. As a result, today many forests have thicker vegetation(植被). Thicker vegetation means more fuel for fires. Also, without fires from time to time, forests become overcrowded and unhealthy. Some trees are dead. The dead wood then easily catches fire. So surprisingly, America has many more fires today partly because of its past fire-fighting practices.

Scientists now understand that a fire can be a natural part of a healthy forest. As a result, countries like Australia allow more fires to burn naturally. Sometimes, firefighters even start fires to get rid of dead wood. Of course, they carefully control the fires. The fire thins out old trees. This allows sunlight to reach the ground. As a result, fires help new trees to grow. Therefore, if a fire is not a serious threat to people, firefighters may let it burn naturally.

1.Why did Russia have so many fires in one month in 2010?

A. Because lighting spread a fire.

B. Because there was much fuel for fires.

C. Because there were not enough firefighters.

D. Because it was unusually hot, dry and windy.

2. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?

A. Fires are serious threats to human beings.

B. Fires can play an important role in forests.

C. Australian firefighters don’t put out fires.

D. It’s difficult for firefighters to control the fires.
